🦷 Decoding Your OPG: Why We Look at Wisdom Teeth
This panoramic X-ray (OPG) gives us a clear view of the entire mouth. In this case, it shows all four third molars (wisdom teeth) are 'impacted'-meaning they are stuck in the jaw. Instead of coming through normally, they are pushing sideways against the healthy teeth next to them.
From a health perspective, an impacted tooth creates a few major risks:
The Bacteria Trap: These angles create pockets where food and bacteria get trapped. Because they are impossible to clean with regular brushing or flossing, they often cause decay (cavities) on both the wisdom tooth and the healthy neighbouring tooth.
Preventing Infection: Trapped bacteria can lead to a painful gum infection called pericoronitis, which often causes significant swelling and jaw stiffness.
Protecting Healthy Molars: The constant pressure from a horizontal tooth can sometimes cause 'resorption'-essentially eating away at the root of the adjacent tooth-leading to structural breakdown or early tooth loss.
Intervening early can reduce these risks, helping to maintain a healthier, stronger mouth.
