During the hot weather, please remember to check-in with vulnerable or isolated loved ones and encourage them to register for the Australian Red Cross TeleRedi service.

We activate the service during a declared , which sees registered people called daily to ensure they’re coping with the extreme weather. If a call goes unanswered or if someone is in distress, an emergency procedure is activated to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

TeleRedi supports people who may be more vulnerable during extreme heat, including those who live alone, older people, people with disability, mental illness, recovering from illness or injury, and people with ongoing health conditions.

To find out more, call the Red Cross on 1800 188 071 or visit www.redcross.org.au/teleredi/

“Raising children and looking after ageing parents truly takes a village, whether it involves support from family, friends, neighbours, or the community.”

Social trends are squeezing millions of Aussies – and now they're being urged to double check their entitlements.

🌟 Meet the Judge: Julia Overton

We are proud to introduce another dedicated judge for the 7NEWS Community Achievement Awards for SA, proudly presented by SkyCity Adelaide - Julia Overton!

Julia is the Chief Executive Officer of Carers SA, dedicated to supporting and advocating for unpaid Carers across South Australia. Her role is centered on improving recognition of Carers and ensuring they have a voice in decisions that affect their lives.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being a judge?
A: "The privilege of hearing Carers’ stories in their own words. The nominations provide a powerful window into the quiet, often unseen work happening across South Australia. It allows me to honour that effort and help shine a light on people who rarely seek recognition."

Q: How would you describe the judging experience?
A: "It is both inspiring and humbling. You’re taken on an emotional journey through each nomination, reading about incredible dedication, resilience and love. It is a serious responsibility, but it is also uplifting to see just how many people are making a difference in our community every day." 💡

Q: What makes a nomination truly stand out to you?
A: "I look for stories that bring the person to life with clear, specific examples—not just general praise—showing the impact of their caring role. The common thread is a combination of quiet strength and deep compassion from people who never see themselves as exceptional."

Q: What would you say to encourage someone to nominate an admired person or organisation?
A: "Your nomination could be the moment a Carer realises their efforts are seen and valued. Don’t assume 'they’re just doing what anyone would do.' If someone has inspired you or changed your life for the better, this is your chance to say thank you in a meaningful way." 🙌

Thank you Rebekha Sharkie MP for shining a light on Young Carers.
Young Carers carry so much on their shoulders balancing school, friendships, work and their caring role.
Their strength is incredible, but the load can be heavy.

If you are a Young Carer, please reach out to Carers SA to access free services to support you in your caring role. https://www.carerssa.com.au/services/young-carers/

In our community we probably all know someone who's caring for a loved one. But did you know that across our state there are more than 30,000 young carers looking after someone?
I recently met Latecia and her family and heard their personal story.
We need to recognise young carers and the hardships they face, and offer better supports to ensure they have educational equity and financial assistance.

🌟 Meet the Judge: Philip Martin

We are delighted to introduce another distinguished judge for the 7NEWS Community Achievement Awards for SA, proudly presented by SkyCity Adelaide – Philip Martin!

Philip is a leader in the not-for-profit sector with over 35 years of experience in executive, CEO, and board roles. His commitment extends nationally as he currently co-chairs the National Carer Strategy Advisory Committee Action Plan Working Group and serves as a Ministerial appointee on the National Carer Strategy Advisory Committee. Importantly, Philip brings vital lived experience as a carer, is a past president of Carers SA, and currently serves as a Director of Carers Australia.

For Philip, the most rewarding part of judging is reading the inspiring stories contained in the applications and witnessing the extraordinary work so many carers do.

He describes the judging experience as "Inspirational and well worth the work to read and assess," noting that the most difficult part is "narrowing the applications down to a winner." 💡

❔ What makes a nomination truly stand out to Philip?
Beyond the valuable role nominees play in their day-to-day lives, Philip looks for those who have "found a way to assist others through community services and direct community support." The common thread he notices is the "obvious tenacity and commitment to others."

Philip emphasises that the award represents a "great opportunity to give recognition to people who are often unseen and under appreciated."

We're hiring!
About the Role
This is a meaningful opportunity to support Aboriginal Carers in a way that respects culture, community, and connection to Country. As an Aboriginal Carer Connector & Coach, you’ll yarn with Carers to understand their story, help them set goals, and connect them with the right supports so they feel heard, valued, and confident in their caring role.
In this frontline, community-focused role, you’ll support Aboriginal Carers through one-on-one coaching, group yarning sessions, advocacy, and community engagement. You’ll work with Carers in ways that suit them — face-to-face, by phone, or out in community, using a culturally safe, strength-based approach that honours each Carer’s story and goals.

It’s great to see Young Carers have the opportunity to speak about their experiences at Federal Parliament.

Young Carer Latecia from SA, along with our CEO, joined other Young Carers from around the country at Parliament House in Canberra with Carers Australia and the National Carer Network.

MPs, Senators, advisers and staff dropped by to chat, hear personal stories, and learn more about what Young Carers need.

There’s a real push for better support nationally, including expanding the Young Carer Bursary and making sure Young Carers are recognised properly in education settings.

This was also the first gathering of the Parliamentary Friends of Carers, led by Leon Rebello MP and Alicia Payne MP.
