Thinking of everyone during this terrifying time 😔
🐴 BUSHFIRE EMERGENCY: STAY SAFE, VICTORIA 🐴
For all emergencies, call our landline any time on 5448 5331
Our hearts go out to all the horse owners and communities currently facing these devastating fires. We know how incredibly stressful it is to manage large animals under the threat of fire, and we are here to support you.
If you are in a high-risk area, your safety and your horses’ safety are the priority. Here are a few urgent reminders from our veterinary team:
• Remove All Gear: If fire is approaching, remove rugs, fly veils, and synthetic halters. These can melt and cause horrific burns. If you must leave a halter on for catching, use a leather one.
• Don't Lock Them In: Never lock horses in stables or small yards. Horses have a natural "flight" instinct; they need space to move away from heat and flames. A large, well-grazed paddock or a sand arena is the safest spot if you cannot evacuate.
• Leave Gates Open: If you have multiple paddocks, open internal gates so they can find their own "safe" spot. Do not let them out onto the road—this creates a danger for them and emergency services.
• Water is Critical: Ensure troughs are full. If you have time, fill extra plastic bins or baths with water.
• Post-Fire Check: If your horse has been through a fire, even if they look okay, watch for laboured breathing or "puffing" (smoke inhalation) and check their legs for heat/burns and wounds.
Hospital Update:
We always have a vet on-call, available for emergencies. If you call our usual landline number (5448 5331) out of hours, you will be transferred to a vet. If you are concerned about your horse’s health or have sustained injuries during the fires, please call us immediately.
Stay safe, stay informed via the VicEmergency app, and look out for one another. 🧡
