People often wonder why a mum would take her newborn to a chiropractor. If chiropractic care is only viewed as something for sore backs or stiff necks, then it can seem unnecessary. But chiropractic is really about supporting the connection between the spine and the nervous system- which in turn sends signals to the brain to develop and grow healthy.
During pregnancy and birth, a baby’s body goes through a lot — pressure, twisting, and traction as they make their way into the world. This can sometimes lead to very subtle restrictions in movement along the spine, which may place extra stress on the nervous system. When the nervous system is under tension, it can be harder for a baby to settle, regulate, and coordinate normal functions.
Parents often seek chiropractic care to support things like easier breastfeeding and latching, more settled digestion and bowel movements, improved comfort, better sleep, and overall calmness. It can also give mums peace of mind, knowing they’re supporting their baby’s wellbeing proactively rather than waiting for challenges to arise. After all, most of us don’t wait for our car to break down before servicing it — we maintain it along the way.
Chiropractic care can begin even before conception, helping support a healthy environment for pregnancy, preparing the body for birth, and assisting the nervous system through labour and recovery. For many families, it’s about supporting both mum and baby through a smoother transition into pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. One of my favourite things about what I do is taking care of babies from the womb, whilst in mum’s tummy, and then finally meeting them earthside!
