❤️ Supporting Women’s Heart Health Across the Goulburn Valley ❤️

At Connected Cardiology, we provide care for women with risk factors for heart disease, symptoms that might suggest a heart issue and those with established heart disease.

We take into consideration both classic risk factors for heart disease like high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking. But we also consider specific risk factors like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes to assess a woman’s overall risk of a heart event.

In day-to-day practice, it’s also important to recognise that women may report non-classic symptoms of a heart condition.

Different life stages such as pregnancy or menopause, can also influence symptoms and treatment.

Wherever our patients are at, we meet them where they are, ensuring they understand their condition and the options for improving their heart health.

But it’s not always easy for women to attend appointments due to responsibilities or living a long way from care.

That’s why our team, led by Dr Jennifer Coller, is committed to ensuring women in the Goulburn Valley have access to specialist heart health care close to home.

We are also flexible in providing consultations through our Shepparton Regional Hub, outreach clinics, or by telehealth - whatever is needed to make our care accessible.

Whether attending a consultation in Shepparton or connecting via telehealth, our goal is the same - to help you understand your heart health and support you with evidence-based guidance and care that fits your life.

With outreach services across the region, we’re proud to make cardiology care more accessible for women and all members of our community.

A heart murmur is an unusual sound a doctor can hear through a stethoscope that indicates turbulent blood flow through the heart. Sometimes it means nothing – it’s just a quirk of that person’s body, which we call an ‘innocent’ murmur. Other times, a heart murmur can indicate a problem with the heart valves.

A normal heartbeat makes the classic ‘lub-dub’ sound when the heart valves close. A murmur sounds different because the valves are not opening or closing properly.

The most common cause of a heart murmur is a narrowed or leaky heart valve. If a doctor hears a suspicious heart murmur then the next step is an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart). If the heart valves appear abnormal, a referral to a cardiologist can be helpful for further assessment and developing a plan for treatment and follow up.

At Connected Cardiology, our team provides regular cardiology clinics at Rumbalara Aboriginal Medical Clinic (Mooroopna) and Njernda Aboriginal Medical Centre (Echuca) ♥️

A key part of Connected’s focus is supporting heart health in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, providing culturally safe, accessible cardiology services closer to home.

The consulting clinics at both services have been very popular and we have recently also commenced an echocardiography service at Njernda in Echuca, providing accessible heart testing, locally.

We’re deeply grateful to the Aboriginal Health Workers & Practitioners, nurses, community drivers and administrative staff at Rumbalara and Njernda, who guide and support us in delivering care that truly meets the needs of the local community.

Together, we are making steps toward closing the heart health gap ♥️💛🖤

"What I enjoy most about working at Connected Cardiology is being part of a positive, supportive, and collaborative team.

The practice is committed to addressing the needs of a regional community, which gives both context to everything we do and daily motivation (given that I've always lived rurally).

I’ve learned so much about the business side of medicine - how scheduling, billing, workflow management all play a role in keeping the clinic running smoothly, and that's given me a deeper appreciation for the behind-the-scenes operations that support excellent healthcare."

At Connected Cardiology we have the pleasure of having Vanessa Morton manage the day to day running of our clinics.

We asked Vanessa, 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘳?

“A “normal” day? That’s a tricky one, because in healthcare, no two days are ever the same!

But that’s exactly what makes it so engaging. In my role, I’m involved in both the clinical and administrative sides of the practice, which gives me a front-row seat to the dedication and compassion our team brings to patient care.

I oversee daily operations, help our staff navigate challenges, and am always looking for ways to improve systems so both our patients and team have the best experience possible.

I also collaborate closely with our providers, making sure they have what they need to focus fully on delivering exceptional care.”

💙 Understanding Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy 💙

Takotsubo or “stress” cardiomyopathy is a sudden, temporary weakening of the heart muscle. It often happens after a period of intense stress or illness and can feel very similar to a heart attack, with chest pain, breathlessness, and changes on heart tests.

Unlike most heart attacks, the arteries are usually not blocked, and in many cases the heart muscle recovers over days to weeks. However, it’s a serious condition that needs hospital care, close monitoring and follow-up with a cardiologist.

At Connected Cardiology, we’re committed to helping our community understand conditions like this - because knowledge saves lives.
