The streets of Shepparton lit up just after midnight yesterday/
But not from streetlights – from the glow of a white Holden ute tearing through town with its headlights off, cops in hot pursuit, and two blokes on a joyride that went way past stupid.
Around 12.45am, the ute was spotted flying down Wyndham Street, allegedly stolen out of Altona the week before.
Cops tried to pull it over, but the driver wasn’t having it. Instead, he killed the lights and punched it, heading south like a ghost on wheels.
Down the Goulburn Valley Highway they went, the speedo creeping up towards 160 kph through Kialla West – no headlights, no licence, no sense.
Police played it cool, calling in backup and setting a trap.
Near the Broadford on-ramp to the Hume, the road finally bit back – a tyre deflation spike laid across the asphalt, and bang.
The Holden didn’t make it another kilometre. The chase was over. Two fellas were dragged out before the rubber stopped smoking.
A 29-year-old now faces a rap sheet that reads like a criminal grocery list: reckless conduct endangering life, dangerous driving, vehicle theft, m**h and w**d possession, failing to stop, driving unlicensed, and using an unregistered vehicle.
He’s been remanded to front Shepparton Magistrates’ Court, while his 24-year-old passenger copped a charge for m**h possession and scored bail. He’ll face court in January.
One stolen Holden, one busted chase, and two blokes who thought they could outrun the blue lights. They found out the hard way – the highway always wins.
