Keith Morton has seen a lot of things in 100 years of living. He’s lived in three States, travelled widely, and played golf in some of the world’s most interesting locations including one very special visit to the National Golf Club in Augusta Georgia, home of the US Masters.
He’s held demanding career roles in mechanical engineering, industrial design and management, and helped to bring up two daughters. He even did a stint of football umpiring back in the day, presiding over a VFA Grand Final in 1956. He has far too many stories to tell for any one Facebook post! And maybe that’s to be expected - you can pack a hell of a lot into 100 years.
Keith misses his late wife Valda who passed away in 2014. Valda suffered from difficult health in her final years, sadly. But in general Keith recognises that he’s lived a fortunate life indeed, including many travel and golfing adventures he enjoyed with Val over the years. Another aspect of his good fortune was an exemption from war service granted during World War Two. Despite wanting to be a pilot he’d been exempted from service due to the critical nature of his work at that time for the Government Aircraft Factories in Maribyrnong.
To this day Keith remains a lively conversationalist and takes pride in remaining “intellectually in good shape”.
Last week brought an enjoyable lunch with one of his daughters and family, and lots of well-wishing from fellow residents at Mooroopna Place, where he has lived for the past three years. Keith is warmly congratulated here by Facility Manager David Shipston, one of his many local admirers. Here’s to 100 years well lived!
