Today we’re diving into the second Body Ecology principle: Food Combining.

It’s not just what you eat that matters, but how you pair your foods. Certain combinations, like heavy proteins with starchy foods, are harder for the body to break down. This can lead to fermentation in the gut, bloating, and sluggish digestion.

The Body Ecology approach makes digestion easier by pairing foods in ways that help the gut do its job efficiently. For example, combine protein with non-starchy vegetables, or enjoy grains and starchy vegetables at a separate meal. When digestion flows smoothly, your gut has more energy to repair, nourish, and protect your whole body.

As we move from summer into fall, it’s the perfect time to reset and get back to basics. This month, we’ll revisit the 7 Body Ecology principles that have guided our community for more than three decades.

The first principle is cultivating the inner ecosystem. Back in the early 90s, Donna Gates introduced an idea that was radical at the time: your gut is an inner ecosystem that must be cared for if you want lasting health. While most of the world was focused on calories, fats, and food pyramids, Donna was teaching that balance in the gut shapes everything from digestion and immunity to mood and energy.

That is why the very first Body Ecology principle is to support and repopulate this inner ecosystem. Fermented foods like cultured vegetables and coconut water kefir help bring beneficial bacteria and yeast back into the body. These living foods create balance and resilience so the rest of your body can function the way it is meant to.
