⚠️ Most people with glaucoma don’t realise they have it.

Vision loss from Glaucoma often starts silently — with no symptoms until damage has already occurred.

👁️ Your risk is higher if you:
• Are over 40
• Have a family history of glaucoma
• Have elevated eye pressure
• Have diabetes
• Use steroid medication long-term

⚠️ Family history significantly increases risk.
Yet many people only get tested after vision changes appear.

🩺 Early detection allows treatment to slow damage before vision is lost.

💚 This World Glaucoma Week, take a proactive step and book a comprehensive eye examination.

👁️ Glaucoma often starts with your peripheral vision!
Because central vision stays clear in the early stages, many people don’t realise their visual field is narrowing. ⚠️

Peripheral vision is essential for:
🚗 Driving safely
🚶 Walking confidently
🏡 Maintaining independence

A comprehensive glaucoma assessment includes visual field testing to detect changes you cannot feel or see yourself. 🩺

❌ Don’t rely on symptoms — early detection protects your sight! ✨

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight.”

It usually develops without pain, redness or obvious warning signs. Many people don’t realise they have it until significant vision loss has already occurred.

Because glaucoma damages the optic nerve gradually, regular comprehensive eye examinations are essential — especially over the age of 40. Early detection allows treatment to slow progression and protect long-term vision.

During Glaucoma Week, prioritise your eye health.

Look at the grid.

Cover one eye. Focus on the centre dot.

Do any of the lines look wavy, blurred or missing?

This simple tool is called an Amsler Grid — and it can help detect changes in central vision that may indicate macular disease.

If you notice sudden distortion, dark patches or missing areas in your vision, seek assessment urgently. Wet AMD can progress quickly, and early treatment is critical.

Do not wait for vision to worsen.

If you’re over 50, have a family history of AMD, or have noticed recent visual changes, book a comprehensive eye examination.

Your central vision is too important to ignore.

There are two types of Age-Related Macular Degeneration — and understanding the difference matters.

Dry AMD
• Develops gradually
• Caused by thinning and ageing of the macula
• May progress slowly over years

Wet AMD
• Less common but more serious
• Caused by abnormal blood vessel growth
• Can lead to sudden distortion or rapid vision loss
• Requires urgent treatment

The good news?
Modern retinal imaging allows us to detect and monitor changes early.

At Optikus Optometry, we use advanced OCT , an advanced non-invasive imaging test to assess the health of your macula in detail — often identifying changes before you notice symptoms.

During National AMD Week, take a moment to prioritise your retinal health.

Clear vision starts with early detection.

Is this what your vision looks like?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) affects the macula — the part of your retina responsible for clear, central vision. It can make faces blur, words distort and everyday tasks more difficult.

The challenging part?
Early AMD often has little to no noticeable symptoms.

That’s why early detection matters.

During National AMD Week, we’re encouraging everyone over 50 — especially those with a family history or past smoking history — to prioritise their macular health.

Let us help protect your vision.

👀 FUN FACT: Up to 80% of learning is visual!

Clear vision supports so much more than just reading the board at school.

📚 Reading fluency
⚽ Sport performance
🎯 Coordination
🏃 Eye coordination
⚖️ Balance
👓 Reflexes
🔍 Depth perception

Vision isn’t just for the classroom — it plays a huge role on the field, court, and playground too. From tracking a moving ball to judging distance, reacting quickly, and staying balanced, strong visual skills help kids stay confident, capable, and active.

Many children assume everyone sees the way they do — even when visual challenges are present. If your child seems clumsy, avoids sport, struggles with focus, or tires easily when reading, a comprehensive vision assessment may reveal more than you expect.

At Optikus Optometrists, we assess how your child’s eyes work together — not just how clearly they see. We also offer engaging VR Vision Training to strengthen visual skills in a fun, supportive way.

Early detection uncovers hidden challenges.
Strong visual skills support confident learners and active kids.

👀 FUN FACT: Vision training can use VR games!

🎮 Improve eye teamwork
👁️ Strengthen tracking and coordination
✨ Build focus skills
🧠 Support visual attention
🎯 Make therapy feel like gaming — not treatment

Many kids with headaches, reading fatigue or attention struggles benefit from strengthening their visual skills.

Vision therapy today can include immersive virtual reality programs designed to improve eye coordination, tracking and focus in a highly engaging way. Instead of repetitive drills, children interact with dynamic visual tasks that feel more like a game than a clinical exercise.

When therapy is fun, kids are more motivated — and consistency leads to better outcomes.

If your child experiences headaches, avoids reading, loses their place easily, or struggles to sustain attention, an assessment can help determine whether visual skills are contributing.

Support growing eyes in a way kids enjoy.

📱 With tablets, laptops and homework online, kids’ eyes are working harder than ever — and we’re seeing more symptoms of digital eye strain.

Tired or sore eyes.
Headaches.
Reduced focus.
Blurred vision.

While these symptoms are often linked to screen use, they can also be signs of underlying eye or vision conditions.

That’s why regular eye checks are so important.

Comprehensive eye examinations don’t just assess screen strain — they help differentiate between digital eye strain and other vision issues that can mimic it, ensuring your child gets the right support.

Early detection makes a real difference to comfort, confidence and learning.

Book now to speak with our team about practical screen habits and how to support your child’s visual health this term.

Help them stay comfortable, focused and ready to learn.
