Sharp, stabbing pain in your calf while running, jumping or accelerating? 🏃‍♀️

You may have sustained a calf muscle strain or tear.

A calf strain occurs when the muscle fibres in your calf are overstretched or torn, often during sudden bursts of movement like sprinting or pushing off.

✅ Why it happens:
Overstretching, poor flexibility, fatigue, previous injury or inadequate warm-up can all contribute.

✅ What to do:
Early management using RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and avoiding HARM (Heat, Alcohol, Running, Massage) helps limit damage.

✅ How physio helps:
Your physiotherapist can assess the severity, guide safe recovery, and design a progressive strengthening and stretching program.

✅ Return to activity and sport:
Calf strains generally recover well with appropriate rehabilitation; the key is managing them early and properly to avoid re-injury.

Shoulder pain is a common issue that many swimmers and surfers can face 🏊‍♂️🏄

The term "swimmer's shoulder" is a broad label encompassing a range of shoulder-related problems. Therefore, providing an accurate diagnosis and identifying the underlying cause is crucial.

Typically, the pain associated with swimmers' shoulder occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff or the bursa (a sac filled with fluid that reduces friction) under the shoulder's arch are pinched 🤏

Several factors contribute to swimmers' shoulder, including:

☑️ Incorrect posture
☑️ Tight muscles
☑️ Excessive mobility of the shoulder joint
☑️ Rigidity in the neck or back
☑️ Lengthy training sessions
☑️ Poor technique

Our expert team of physiotherapists can help diagnose and treat your shoulder pain.

Avoid getting sidelined by an injury early this cricket season🏏

Cricket season is here, and now that you've started, you might be noticing some ni**les. Here are some of them:

🦵Hamstring Injuries: The rapid sprints and abrupt changes in direction can stress the hamstrings.

💪 Shoulder Injuries: The demanding bowling technique can cause discomfort or shoulder injuries.

🤕 Lower Back Pain: The repetitive motions associated with bowling and batting can strain the lower back.

🦶 Twisted Ankle: Quick direction changes and abrupt halts can result in ankle sprains or strains.

😵‍💫 Abdominal Strains: The twisting and turning movements in the game can bring on abdominal strain.

If you're pulling up a bit sore, get it checked before it gets worse.

Feeling a little off-balance or dizzy lately? You might be dealing with vertigo! 😵‍💫

A common type is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which happens when tiny crystals in your inner ear get disrupted by sudden movements.

Did you know BPPV causes about 50% of dizziness in older adults? These dizzy spells can last minutes, hours, or even days! 🫤

What triggers it? Vertigo episodes are often set off by quick head movements like looking up, tilting your head, rolling over in bed, getting up too fast, or bending down.

What are the signs? The telltale signs of BPPV include dizziness, feeling faint, trouble with balance, nausea, and even vomiting 🤢

Can Physiotherapy help? Absolutely! Physiotherapists use specialised exercises to help reset your inner ear, restoring balance and reducing the intensity and frequency of vertigo spells.

Ready to find your balance again? Book a session with our expert team at Eramosa Physiotherapy ➡️ https://www.eramosaphysiotherapy.com.au/ or call (03) 5977 6590.

Elbow Pain Hitting Your Game? Understanding Golfer's Elbow! 🏌️‍♀️

If you're between 40 and 60 and feeling pain on the inside of your elbow, especially when gripping or picking up objects, it could be Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylosis).

Despite the name, this overuse injury isn't just for golfers! It commonly affects people involved in:

✅ Sports: Tennis, squash, weight-lifting, or gymnastics.

✅ Activities: Painting, building, or repetitive manual tasks.

The pain results from wear and tear on the tendon connecting your forearm muscle to the inner elbow bone, often due to unaccustomed load, poor technique, or changes in equipment.

Don't let this ni**le become a chronic problem! Early physiotherapy treatment can significantly reduce your pain and stop it from impacting your work and sports life.
