We’ve all heard the saying “no pain, no gain” - but in physiotherapy, the opposite is often true.

Pain isn’t a sign you’re getting stronger; it’s a signal that something may not be moving or loading well.

Training, work and daily activity should challenge your body, not break it down. Moving well, recovering properly and addressing issues early allows you to keep progressing without setbacks.

If something has been sore, tight or not quite right, it’s worth checking in before it becomes a bigger problem.

Term 1 is here - and that means school sports are back! 👍

As kids jump back into training and competition, it’s important to make sure their bodies are ready for the demands of sport.

Growing bodies are more vulnerable to strains and sprains, which can impact both performance and development if not managed early.

At Eramosa Physiotherapy, our experienced team offers functional assessments to check your child’s readiness for sport and provide practical injury-prevention advice to help keep them playing all season long.

Give your child the best possible start to the year.

Sharp pain at the back of your thigh during sport or activity may indicate a hamstring muscle strain or tear.

This injury occurs when the hamstring muscle fibres are overstretched or torn and is common in football, netball, hockey and athletics.

A hamstring strain can happen while sprinting or running, during excessive stretching such as gymnastics or ballet, or as the result of a fall.

Risk factors include older age, previous hamstring injury, poor muscle strength, local muscle fatigue, strength imbalances and lower back tightness or injury.

If you think you’ve done something to your hammy, it’s best to get it checked by one of our qualified physiotherapists as soon as you can.

Pain in your hip, groin, thigh or buttock?

It may be Hip Osteoarthritis (Hip OA) - where cartilage breaks down, creating rough and uneven joint surfaces.

Hip OA can cause:

• Pain with weight-bearing
• Pain when sleeping
• Deep or sharp pain
• Stiffness and limited movement

Risk factors include age, obesity, manual labour or sport, previous joint injury and genetics.

Your physiotherapist can help manage symptoms through individualised exercise programs, low-impact activity options, manual therapy, soft-tissue therapy, taping and advice to reduce stiffness and inflammation.

Pain, swelling or tenderness around your knee?

It may be a degenerative meniscal tear - damage to the meniscus that helps with rotational stability and shock absorption in your knee.

Common signs can include:

• Pain when bending the knee
• Swelling
• Tenderness around the joint
• Restricted movement

This type of tear often develops gradually due to degeneration of the meniscus, knee joint osteoarthritis, previous injury or increased load through the knee.

How physiotherapy can help:

A physiotherapist will assess your knee, and as symptoms settle, treatment focuses on restoring movement and strength with a specific, graduated rehabilitation program.
