Helpful information about Temporary accommodation.
At 83 and 79, Gloria and Lindsay never imagined they would face homelessness.
After 35 years in the Tweed, they lost their long-term rental in February 2025 and suddenly had nowhere to go. Lindsay uses a wheelchair and lives with serious health challenges, making the search for an accessible home even more frightening.
“The landlord gave us notice to get out, and we had nowhere to go,” Gloria said.
“I was more worried about Lindsay than myself because he’s in a wheelchair.”
After a short stay in a motel, Gloria and Lindsay were offered a safe place to stay through Social Futures’ Supported Temporary Accommodation in Tweed Heads South, along with support to help them find a permanent home.
Five months later, Gloria opened the letter they had been hoping for.
“When I got the letter from the housing commission, I said, ‘We’ve got a place!’”
Now settled into accessible social housing in the community they love, Gloria turned to Lindsay and said, “Oh, we are definitely one of the lucky ones!”
If you or someone you know is facing housing insecurity, support is available.
