Using our clients interests within therapy activities is so effective.

When I used generic R word resources with this client he found it very boring and needed a lot of encouragement which took up valuable session time.

This client absolutely loves Pokémon so I found this online Pokémon encyclopaedia to find R words to practice (if he gets it right, that Pokémon is on his “team”) and he can do this non stop with full engagement and effort!

My students loved this play-based therapy for learning prepositions today. They made up story scripts including all the prepositions they are learning (over, under, in, on, through, around, in front, behind, between, and more!!).

It worked so well compared to using picture-based resources. Why does play-based therapy work?
➡️ sensory and tactile aspect links to memory
➡️ easier to understand when demonstrated in 3D
➡️ when the students are engaged and having fun it aides their learning
➡️ easier to recall a meaningful story line than individual sentences with no context.

Teach letter sounds before letter names ‼️

Love this poster from Phonic Books that shows how many of the letter NAMES actually help children to know their SOUNDS. It’s far more important for literacy development to know the sounds.

So when you’re teaching children their alphabet, start with the sounds. Some letters make more than one sound (and some sounds can be more than one letter) but this guide gives you the first and most common sound to teach.

Hands up if you love phonetic transcription 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️

Did you know the International Phonetic Alphabet contains 107 sound symbols and 52 diacritics (the little symbols that can modify each of those sounds)?

This is how we record a students articulation errors to ensure we are accurately capturing all the nuances in their speech.

Systematic Phonics is all about controlling the types of words children are asked to read and spell, so that they can feel confident in their skills.

Consonant+vowel+consonant (CVC) words are a great early stage for children to master.

But did you know that 5 of these words within this CVC game are NOT CVC but actually Consonant+Long Vowel words which children will find a lot more challenging to spell, and will result in them losing their confidence to try!

Can you pick which 5 are not CVC? Swipe for answers ➡️
