Alcidion

Alcidion Alcidion provides smarter solutions for clinicians. Alcidion provides active intelligence and decision support software for high performance healthcare.

With our FHIR-events platform, Miya Precision, we assist healthcare organisations in building interoperable digital ecosystems that liberate data to enhance patient outcomes. Alcidion is an innovative health informatics company that specializes in clinical products that improve productivity, safety and efficiency. By making clinicians more efficient, eliminating key clinical risks, tracking patient progress through journeys within and between healthcare facilities and making recommendations about patient care to the care team based on complex analysis of the clinical and administrative context for each patient, the patient flow, patient safety and organisational efficiency can all be improved and key critical risks eliminated. Alcidion has created the Miya Platform, which uses a Decision Support Engine (DSE) to actively monitor electronic data feeds to detect emerging risk to patients and to the organization. Miya can provide guidance to the right people to mitigate risk before harm occurs.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust reports a five-day reduction in average patient length of stay across its community hospitals, supported by Miya Precision👏

The trust has shared the results of the first phase of their digital patient flow programme - designed and led by their teams to improve discharge planning and bed visibility across seven community hospitals.

Using Miya Flow digital journey boards, staff can now see transport arrangements, social care provision, take-home medications and destination details in a single view, helping them identify potential delays earlier and reduce the risks that come with extended stays.

The result: patients moving on to the next stage of their care when they're clinically ready - not when the paperwork catches up.

As Jane Howells, Digital PMO Manager at the trust, put it: "Digital tools supporting patient flow are helping reduce administrative burden and support clinicians to spend more time focusing on patient care."

We're proud to have worked alongside the team at Herefordshire and Worcestershire - the first community trust to use Miya Precision - and we're looking forward to seeing their journey continue.

“The EMR/EPR is good in terms of what it’s meant to do, but it’s not necessarily going to address the issues healthcare services are facing today - how to work smarter, more efficiently and more effectively and how to manage patients beyond the walls of the hospital.” - Kaye Hocking, Chief Product Officer.

The second episode of the new Alcidion Insights Video Series explores why many health systems are now looking beyond the electronic medical record to address the operational realities of modern healthcare.

Chief Clinical Information Officer Tracy McClelland, Chief Revenue Officer (UK & Ireland) Darren Ransley and Chief Product Officer Kaye Hocking examine the difference between simply digitising patient records and digitising the clinical workflows that underpin care delivery.

While EMRs have helped health services transition away from paper records, they often leave critical workflow gaps. The episode explores how fragmented systems, manual workarounds and incomplete visibility can continue to create friction for clinicians - even in organisations with mature EMR implementations.

By focusing on workflow orchestration and surfacing the right information at the right moment, digital platforms can help clinicians work more efficiently and ultimately release more time for patient care.

Gold Coast Health has selected Alcidion and Miya Precision to deliver an end-to-end remote patient monitoring solution.

The solution will enable the health service to extend virtual care into patients' homes - supporting those who can be safely monitored outside the hospital, reducing unnecessary admissions and freeing up capacity for those who need it most.

With demand for healthcare services continuing to rise, health services are exploring new ways to deliver care beyond the hospital. Aligning with Gold Coast Health’s "Always Care" philosophy, this initiative reflects a growing recognition that the future of healthcare isn't just about building more beds, but delivering care in smarter, more flexible ways.

Domenic Girolamo, Executive Director of Digital and Innovation at Gold Coast Health, said: "Digital-enabled virtual care is a core enabler of the next generation of person-centred models under development. The ongoing enhancement of traditional hospital-based services into the home and community, is supporting a broader transformation of care delivery - creating a smarter, more flexible and digitally connected health service for the future.”

Alcidion Group Managing Director and CEO Kate Quirke said: "Remote patient monitoring is transforming the way health services think about capacity - it's no longer just about hospital beds, but about meeting patients where they are."

We are looking forward to supporting Gold Coast Health on this important work for Gold Coast residents and beyond.

Across Canada, patient flow is commonly framed as an operational challenge: bed capacity, emergency department overcrowding and system-wide pressure.

But these aspects tell only part of the story – and increasingly, health systems are coming to understand the clinical impact of poor flow. Patients end up in clinically sub-optimal wards, care progression slows down, and clinical harm can follow.

“Patient flow is a clinical safety function, one that demands the same rigour as any other patient safety domain.”

See why it matters:

➡️Also: Catch us at Digital Health Canada in Ontario next week, where Alcidion’s Nick White will moderate a panel discussion on how digital tools like Miya Precision are helping unlock hidden capacity in hospitals and improving patient flow for clinical and operational benefit – we look forward to seeing you there.

“Point solutions will serve a specific need or part of the pathway, but unless that information is stitched together into a single patient record, you end up with broken workflows, repetition and information that doesn’t move smoothly through the system.”
- Tracy McClelland, Chief Clinical Information Officer, Alcidion

Data fragmentation remains one of healthcare’s most persistent digital challenges.

In the first episode of the new Alcidion Insights Series, we explore why fragmented systems continue to disrupt clinical workflows, create duplication and prevent clinicians from accessing a complete picture of a patient’s care.

Featuring Alcidion’s Chief Clinical Information Officer, Tracy McClelland, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Paul Deffley and Chief Product Officer, Kaye Hocking, the conversation examines why point solutions alone cannot resolve these challenges - and how a platform-based approach can help orchestrate data across existing systems.

By bringing information together across the digital ecosystem, health services can support better decision-making, reduce duplication and create a smoother experience for both clinicians and patients.

🏥Patient flow in hospitals is a problem - not just an operational one.

When flow breaks down, harm follows. Crowded emergency departments increase clinical risk. Prolonged inpatient stays expose patients to deconditioning and infection. Fragmented transitions between services create gaps in oversight and missed opportunities for early intervention.

And yet, patient flow is still often treated as an operational metric - bed capacity, delayed discharges, escalation status. These measures matter, but they're symptoms, not causes.
In our latest article for FutureScot, we explore why patient flow must now be owned jointly by clinical, digital and operational leaders - and how digital platforms can support safer care across organisational boundaries.

Is your hospital trying to improve patient flow and progression of care?

With rising patient demand, workforce pressures, and stretched capacity, getting flow right has never been more important. But it's a complex challenge - success requires systems thinking, a focus on culture and real-time visibility across the whole organisation.

Alcidion's Dr Paul Deffley and Nick White explore these ideas in out latest book, 'Flow: A Handbook to Creating the Right Conditions for Patient Flow'. To hear them discuss the thinking behind it, have a listen to their recent interview on Talking HealthTech with Peter Birch: https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0FC8g0

Coming to ? Visit us at Booth B40 - we'll have copies of the handbook available for NHS staff and leaders. We'd love to see you there.

Last week, Alcidion customers and partners came together at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground for Engage 2026 – our inaugural ANZ conference. Over two days, we heard compelling stories from a range of healthcare systems: organisations using Miya Precision and other digital tools to tackle the big issues of bed capacity, virtual care, AI and fragmented care delivery.

From enabling connected care across vast regional distances, to building integrated care records for the Australian Defence Force - we heard what's possible when ambitious teams have the right tools.

A few highlights across two days:
➡️"At the end of the day, it’s not really about the system; it’s about the conversations that are enabled by having the data available." ~ Alcidion NED and former Alfred Health CEO Professor Andrew Way AM’s keynote address
➡️Fran Brockhus from Western Health shared their innovative work with Red & Green Day protocols to improve patient flow, and a fantastic visualisation of the move of beds across to the new Footscray Hospital using Miya Precision’s Hospital-at-a-Glance capability.
➡️‘Navigating Patient Access like a Drift Racer’ - an unexpected but powerful analogy by Anna Dewan of Northeast Health Wangaratta, demonstrating the speed and style of their work to implement Miya Precision last year. Dave Piggott will now always be referred to as being on the ‘drive team.’
➡️Andrew McGill of Northern Adelaide Local Health Network shared the experience of ‘Making the Invisible Visible’, and the great work they’ve done in their Network Operations Centre.
➡️A common theme from the team at University Hospital Southampton NHS FT and from Tara Jones and Lena Tat at Goulburn Valley Health: transforming healthcare is about the people, more so than any kind of technology. Tara & Lena highlighted the incredible positive impact that remote care is having for their gestational diabetes patients.
➡️We heard about two of the most complex Miya Precision deployments: firstly, from the team at Hume Rural Health Alliance who are enabling connected healthcare across rural and regional Victoria, and secondly from the team at Leidos, our partners in building integrated care records for the Australian Defence Force. It was incredible to see the scale of impact of Miya Precision in these challenging settings.
➡️And finally, a grounded, fascinating discussion on AI in Healthcare by Dr Sudeep Saraf of Alfred Health whose expertise helped shine some light on this rapidly emerging subject.

We cannot thank our speakers enough their insights, engaging metaphors 🏎️ and openness in sharing their experiences. Digital progress in healthcare doesn't happen without driven, passionate people, and that was evident across every session. 👏
