For 30 years, Professor Doug Shelton has watched the role of paediatric healthcare at Gold Coast Health evolve dramatically.

"Initially, we focused on caring for acutely unwell children with physical illnesses," the Women's, Newborns and Children's Clinical Director said.

"Overtime, we expanded to look after children more holistically including their development, emotional and mental health, and wellbeing.

"The health service is now one of the most innovative and productive services that I've ever had the pleasure to work with, incorporating inpatients, outpatients, children's critical care, neonatal intensive care, paediatric surgery, Child Development and Community Child Health Services."

Our health service currently has more than 450 dedicated staff care for more than 132,000 paediatric outpatients and 30,700 paediatric emergency presentations annually.

Tube-fed runner Juliette McAleer has participated in the Gold Coast Marathon for the past several years, working with our on-site medical responders to make sure she was fully prepared. 🏥🏃‍♀️

Inspired by their calmness and professionalism at the event, Juliette wanted to give back.

"I had some medals designed with the help of Epic Medals to remind the team that their work matters and I value them," she said. 🏅

"They all give so much of themselves in serving our communities, and this is just my little way to say thank you on behalf of every runner like me who has felt safer, stronger, and braver because they were there.”

It was such a special and memorable moment for our team - thank you Juliette for making their day. 💗

What does a typical day for a midwife look like? 🤔 As you may suspect, there’s no such thing!

“Babies don't tell us when they're coming, which would be lovely, but it’s also part of the magic of the job,” Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) midwife Kirsten said.

The continuity of care model used in MGP is something Kirsten has found beneficial and rewarding over the past 11 years.

“I often look after women for each of their babies, for instance I've looked after one woman for all four of her babies!

“It becomes such a special relationship, and you really get to know them and get to see the cute little newborns as toddlers and preppies.

“I feel so grateful that I can work at a hospital that provides this model of care within an amazing team of midwives and obstetricians that are all aiming for the same thing - to ensure all women feel respected and cared for,” she said. 💖

Today we celebrate our incredible neonatal team.

Encompassing the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Special Care Nursery (SCN), our staff looks after more than 1,000 babies every year.

"World Prematurity Day is a chance to celebrate and acknowledge the lifesaving work our team does, our families who spend time with us and of course our prem babies," Neonatology Director Dr Peter Schmidt said.

Tonight, Gold Coast University Hospital will be lit up purple in honour of our premature community. 💜

A new procedure is being used to treat pulmonary embolisms at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH), thanks to cutting-edge technology.

The Inari Medical’s FlowTriever system features a large catheter and syringe that removes large volumes of clot, while limiting blood loss.

Patients having the procedure don’t need to go under general anaesthetic and can transition to a general medical ward afterwards, reducing pressure on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where pulmonary embolisms patients have traditionally gone after surgery to remove clots.

Cardiac Clinical Nurse Consultant Elle Newman is taking her passion for heart health one ‘skip’ further this month - literally. 🦘

She’s taking part in the Heart Foundation's ‘Skip for Heart’ challenge, raising vital funds for lifesaving research, prevention, and improved cardiac care.

With 11 years of experience on the cardiac ward at Gold Coast University Hospital, Elle knows the stakes all too well.

“Even though there have been a lot of advancements, one person dies from heart disease every 18 minutes in Australia,” she said.

“Ten minutes of skipping is equivalent to 30 minutes of jogging, so as a busy mum of two it’s such an easy thing for me to do for my health, and I want to inspire others to do the same.”

It’s a full-circle moment for Elle, who first picked up a rope through the Jump for Heart school program as a child.

Have you ever wanted to own an original, one-of-a-kind artwork? Now's your chance! 🖼️🎨

You can bid on an artwork by acclaimed semi-realist painter Lucinda Leveille, while directly supporting the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation - with all proceeds going towards supporting patients and families in our community.

Unlike many contemporary artists, Leveille never produces prints.

Every piece is an original artwork, making this fundraiser an extraordinary opportunity to own something unique, while making a huge difference to those in need.

Today we’re spotlighting our dedicated diabetes team - a powerhouse of 11 specialists across Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) and Robina Hospital.

🧠 With over 160 years of combined experience, including Diabetes Educator David Irvine’s 30 years at GCUH, this team brings deep expertise and heartfelt care to every patient.

This World Diabetes Day, the team are highlighting some of the common challenges that come with the condition, which includes maintaining stable blood glucose levels, taking regular medication and testing blood sugar levels.

So, what drives the team? 🤔

“Knowing the education you’re providing is making a difference, especially when someone returns with improved health outcomes,” Clinical Nurse Narelle Davies said.

Workplaces play a vital role in supporting people with diabetes to feel comfortable at work.

For those with Type 1, hypoglycaemia can happen unexpectedly, and colleagues need to know how to help.

Do you know someone living with diabetes? Take the opportunity to ask how it affects their daily life today – it might be just what they need. 🫶

Registered Nurse Sam Clayton knows from personal experience just how far a career in nursing can take you.

From working across the globe in various nursing roles, she’s currently Assistant Director of Nursing for Professional Practice and Magnet Program Director. 🌍

“I only planned to go to Saudi Arabia long enough to save some money to buy a house, but I ended up spending nearly eight years in the Middle East and met my husband there too," Sam said.

“It was such a culture shock, but it taught me the importance of recognising and respecting those cultural differences."

More recently, Sam and her team have been hard at work pulling together Gold Coast Health’s Magnet submission, which successfully resulted in a redesignation of the international recognition for excellence in nursing and midwifery.

“For us to be able to achieve this for a second time is really special, and we even went straight to a Magnet site visit which is quite rare.”

Sam finds fulfilment in uplifting fellow nurses. ✨

“What I love most is making a difference for our nurses and hopefully giving them a sense of pride in what they do,” she said.
