Your eyes are just as vulnerable to UV damage as your skin, yet they’re often the part we forget to protect. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can accelerate ageing of the eye and increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and even ocular melanoma, a rare but serious form of skin cancer.
Wearing high quality sunglasses with UV400 protection, a broad-brimmed hat, and avoiding peak UV times can dramatically reduce your risk. Taking simple sun-safe steps now helps protect your vision and your long-term eye health for years to come.
Stay sun-safe and look after your eyes! 🧡🖤

Is expired sunscreen better than no sunscreen? We’ve all been there- ready for a day outdoors, only to realise your sunscreen is past its expiry date. So, is expired sunscreen better than none at all?Only if you have no other option- but it’s not recommended.
Once sunscreen passes its expiry date, the active UV filters can break down, meaning it may no longer provide the SPF protection stated on the label.
In Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) requires all sunscreens to display a use-by or expiry date, as protection can decline over time or when exposed to heat.
If you’re caught without a new bottle, using one that’s only slightly out of date and still looks, smells and feels normal is better than nothing, but it should be replaced as soon as possible.
🚫 Avoid using sunscreen that:
Is well past its expiry date
Has changed in colour, texture or smell
Has been stored in heat (for example, in a car or beach bag)
✅ Best practice:
Store sunscreen below 30°C
Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure
Reapply every 2 hours or after swimming/sweating
Replace your bottle each summer for reliable protection
Your skin deserves the best protection every day. 🧡🖤

Introducing WA’s first MetaOptima 3D Total Body Photography system.
We’re excited to share that The Skin Cancer Centre Coogee is the first clinic in Western Australia to offer the latest MetaOptima 3D Total Body Photography (TBP) system - freshly installed this week!
How It Works:
·Comprehensive coverage: A detailed baseline image of your entire skin surface is created, helping us accurately track any changes.
·AI-assisted monitoring: Each follow-up image is compared with your baseline using AI-driven analysis, helping to spot even subtle changes that may be missed by the naked eye.
·Doctor-led assessment: Our experienced skin cancer doctors review and interpret every result to ensure precise, personalised care.
Why It Matters:
· Early Detection: Early diagnosis saves lives. TBP helps identify melanoma and other skin cancers at their earliest, most treatable stages.
· Peace of Mind: Ideal for those with a personal or family history of skin cancer providing reassurance that your skin is being carefully monitored.
Please note: Total Body Photography complements your regular skin checks- it doesn’t replace them. Together, they provide the most comprehensive skin surveillance available.
It is highly recommended for patients with multiple moles, atypical naevi, previous melanoma or family history of melanoma and those with high sun exposure.
Book your appointment today and experience the future of skin cancer detection with WA’s first MetaOptima 3D TBP system.🧡🖤

Internationally and in Australia, about 10% of melanoma patients report a first-degree relative with melanoma. High‑risk individuals in Australia include those with two or more close relatives with melanoma. Other Key Risk Factors include: Fair skin that burns easily, history of blistering sunburns (especially childhood), and numerous or atypical (dysplastic) moles, weakened immune system (due to disease or medication), age, and being male further increase the risk in Australia
If you have a family history of melanoma, talk to your skin cancer doctor about regular full-body skin checks and preventative care. While we recommend annual skin checks, if you notice any new or evolving moles, please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with us for a spot check! Early detection saves lives. Sun-damaged skin isn’t just cosmetic, it can increase your skin cancer risk.
The good news? You can protect and repair your skin.
Prevention: Slip, slop, slap, seek & slide – and use SPF 30+ every day when UV ≥ 3.
Treatment: For existing sun damage, Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a great option. It treats sunspots and surrounding damaged skin, lowers the chance of new spots forming, and can leave your skin looking and feeling healthier. Book your full-body skin check today and ask your doctor if PDT is right for you. 🧡🖤

Thinking about getting a tattoo? Or already have one? Tattoos are a great form of self-expression, but they can make it harder to spot the early signs of skin cancer.
Skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma have been reported within tattooed areas. While tattoos don’t cause cancer, the ink can hide changes or mimic skin cancer under examination- sometimes leading to delays in diagnosis.
Our advice:
Avoid tattooing over or near moles, birthmarks, pigmented spots, or scars from skin cancer removal.
Keep up with regular skin checks with a doctor trained in dermoscopy.
If you’re at higher risk, consider 6-monthly checks with total-body photography for peace of mind.
Your tattoos tell your story- but make sure your skin stays part of the conversation.🧡🖤

Skin cancer doesn’t always look obvious. Some moles, like dysplastic naevi, can look completely normal to the naked eye, even though they carry a higher risk of melanoma. Moles are clusters of pigment-producing cells. While most are harmless, knowing your skin helps you spot changes which the earliest warning signs of something more serious
What you can do:
Perform monthly self-checks in good light
Look for new or changing spots: alterations in shape, size, colour, texture, or non-healing sores
Book a skin check every 6–12 months (more often if you have multiple dysplastic naevi or other risk factors)
