A Win for Veterans: Advocacy Reform to Protect Those Who Served

Australian Veteran Health Services welcomes Matt Keogh’s announcement to regulate the veterans’ advocacy sector. This is a vital step to make sure veterans are never exploited when seeking the support they deserve.

Veterans have served this country and should never have to pay to get the help they need to access their entitlements. Our submission to the recent Senate Inquiry called for stronger regulation of paid advocates, mandatory training and accreditation, and better protections for vulnerable veterans - and we’re proud to see these recommendations being adopted.

As a veteran-led organisation, we’ll keep working with government and the sector to protect veterans and their families.

Our focus is veterans' health, not fees. AVHS provides free, bulk-billed services by veterans, for veterans - because care should never come at a cost. Veterans have served this country and should never have to pay to access the services they deserve.

We also believe the new Institute of Veterans’ Advocacy should include representation from the medical profession, because health is a critical part of veteran wellbeing.

Together, we can make sure support is accessible, ethical, and focused on what matters most: the people who served.

Supporting Mental Health in Our Community

At AVHS, we see firsthand how important mental health support is for our veterans and their families. It’s not just part of what we do, it’s at the heart of everything we believe in.

That’s why we’re excited to share something special from one of our own. Dr Dan Pronk, an ex-service member and part of our AVHS family, has created resources that we genuinely believe can make a difference. His Triple Bundle combines practical tools for building resilience for yourself, your kids, and your daily life.

We’re giving away 2 bundles, personally signed by Dr Dan with a message for the recipient.

Here’s how to enter:
✅ Follow or AustralianVeteranHealthServices on Facebook
✅ In the comments, nominate a friend or family member who could benefit from these resources
✅ Tag them so they know you’re thinking of them

Mental health affects all of us. Sometimes the people we care about most are the ones who need support but won’t ask for it. This is your chance to let them know you see them and you care.

Giveaway ends 1st Dec 2025. Australia-wide delivery.

We’re proud to share that our own Dr Dan Pronk recently presented at the 2025 Australasian Military Medical Association Conference, delivering insights on building resilience within the high-stress, high-consequence role of providing military medical support.

His expertise in this area reflects not only his clinical excellence but his deep understanding of the unique psychological and operational challenges faced by military medical personnel.

The recognition he received from AMMA President Naval CAPT Ian Young AM speaks to the value of his contribution to military medical practice and the respect he commands within the defense medical community.

At AVHS, we’re fortunate to have Dr Dan as one of our Medical Officers here in Adelaide. His commitment to advancing military medical care, combined with his dedication to building resilience in those who serve, exemplifies the caliber of healthcare professionals we’re privileged to work alongside.

The Government has launched the Su***de Prevention Framework 2025–2031 and Implementation Plan - the first strategy of its kind in Australia. It brings Defence and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs together to improve the health and wellbeing of ADF members and veterans, and forms a key part of the response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Su***de.

At Australian Veteran Health Services (AVHS), we’re proud to stand alongside this commitment. Our clinics are bulk-billing and run by veterans, for veterans, offering care from GPs, psychologists, and medical professionals who truly understand the challenges of service life.

We’re here to make sure every veteran gets the help they need - without fees, without red tape, and with dignity.

Why Current Serving Members Should Plan Ahead with AVHS:

DVA is significantly more likely to accept claims while you’re still serving - when evidence is fresh, witnesses are available, and the service connection is clear.

Many conditions like arthritis can develop up to 25 years after discharge, but you need documented proof of the original incident. Without early liability claims, you could face costly medical bills and uphill battles to prove decades-old injuries.

AVHS helps serving members get conditions formally accepted and listed on DVA White Cards now, ensuring future treatment coverage when needed - not when it’s too late to prove the connection.

Bottom line: Secure your future health coverage while the evidence exists, not when you’re fighting to prove something that happened 20 years ago.

This AVHS visit to RAAF Base Edinburgh reinforces our commitment to being there for Australia’s defence community – not just when they transition to civilian life, but while they’re still serving.

Today, our Springfield Central team came together to honour those who served and sacrificed for the freedoms we hold dear.

In this moment of reflection, we’re reminded that remembrance is both personal and collective. It’s about the stories that shaped us, the values that guide us, and the commitment we share to build the future they fought to protect.

At AVHS, we stand united in gratitude and remembrance.

Today, we pause. Not just to remember what was lost, but to honour what was given, and what we carry forward.

For many veterans and their families, Remembrance Day isn’t about distant history. It’s the sound that still triggers a memory. The story a grandfather shares. The promise we make in that minute of silence, to work for the peace they fought for.

At AVHS, we stand with those who’ve served and those who support them. Because remembrance isn’t just looking back. It’s moving forward, together.

Lest we forget. 🌺

AVHS welcomes the Senate Inquiry’s final report on veteran advocacy services.

We’re grateful to the Committee for their hard work and thoughtful recommendations. The report highlights the intricate nature of veterans’ entitlements law and calls for continued efforts to improve timeliness and quality in claims processing while maintaining accountability for public funds.

It also raises serious concerns about some for-profit advocacy models. Veterans have already served their country- they shouldn’t have to pay for the support they deserve.

At AVHS, we’re proud to deliver a clinician-led, ethical model of care built by veterans for veterans. No commissions, no kickbacks - just trusted support for our veterans from medical professionals who understand the system and care deeply about outcomes.

We look forward to continuing our work with government and the veteran community to build a safer, more effective advocacy system.
