✨ Goitrogens & Your Thyroid ✨
We often hear that kale is a superfood — so the more, the better, right? And nuts are praised as a great plant-based protein source. But did you know that both kale and certain nuts (along with other foods) contain compounds called goitrogens, which can affect how well your thyroid works?
The thyroid is your body’s energy regulator, and when it slows down, you feel it everywhere.
⚖️ How goitrogens affect the thyroid:
• They can reduce iodine uptake (iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production)
• This may lower thyroid hormone levels
• Over time, this can contribute to symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
🥀 Common symptoms of low thyroid function:
• Fatigue or low energy
• Feeling cold easily
• Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
• Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
• Dry skin & hair thinning
• Constipation
• Mood changes (low mood, anxiety)
🌱 Foods high in goitrogens include:
• Soy products (tofu, tempeh, edamame, soy milk, miso, vegan cheeses/meat alternatives)
• Cassava root
• Millet
•Peanuts & pine nuts
•Cruciferous veggies (cabbage, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts)
💡 Wellness tip:
Cooking cruciferous & soy foods (steaming, sautéing, boiling) reduces their goitrogenic effect, making them easier on your thyroid. Balance is key — you don’t need to avoid them completely, just enjoy them in moderation and in cooked form.
