This year Arches Audiology will be teaming up with The University of Queensland to deliver an important new program designed to support older adults with hearing loss - and the people who share their daily lives.

The ACE Your Hearing program is a small-group, research-based initiative that focuses not only on communication strategies, but also on social connection and emotional well-being.

Many older adults tell us that hearing loss affects far more than sound - it influences relationships, confidence, and the simple pleasure of staying involved in conversations.

This program aims to change that.

A key feature of the research is the involvement of family members and close friends. They are not invited to ā€˜check in’ on anyone or because we assume someone can’t manage alone. They are included because communication is a shared responsibility. When both sides of a conversation understand how to support each other, communication becomes easier, frustration reduces, and social life becomes more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Participation in the program is free, and community members aged 50+ with hearing loss affects- along with family or friends aged 18+ are warmly encouraged to take part.

To learn more or register your interest, please contact us via email: contact@archesaudiology.com.au or comment ACE below and we will send you a DM.

I signed up to a 10-Week Program

Serendipitously, I was able to get a spot into a golf clinic after umming and ahhing about it (by the time I decided to do it, all the spots were taken) and coming up with all sorts of excuses not to do it.

One being, I don’t identify as a golfer but in recent times, I’ve become intrigued by the sport. I want to know what the allure is.

I am doing a 10 week golf clinic and I couldn’t help but think about how basic everything was, standing shoulder width, moving from core rather than wrist etc, and playing ā€˜games’ to practice our putting skills.

It made me think about my APD therapy clinics and how we share similarities in learning the fundamentals and the importance of guided practice. Sometimes what seems to be obvious isn’t until our attention is directed to it. Sure, without a formal program, I would eventually learn to putt, but it would cost me so much time/money and years of poor playing - that does not sound fun to anyone! Oh, I may never even make it to a golf course!

I mean you don’t know what you don’t know… but…

After 50 minutes of learning how to hold the putt stick (omg I don’t even know what it is called! Is it just golf club?) and swinging it, my mind is clearer, and I feel happy to be with my friends.

I think that’s what it is all about it. We’ll see ā›³ļø

Highlights from Cambodia - the first step towards conducting a Community Assessment whilst visiting schools in Rural Cambodia (Pailin and KratiĆ© ) that Arches Audiology has been donating to since it was established . It has been wonderful to get to know my motherland, and see the impacts of globalisation and modernisation has on the country. Also, how the diaspora remains connected to this beautiful country Cambodia šŸ‡°šŸ‡

If only setting up really was as quick as this!

As audiologists, we look forward to discovering the softest level that you can hear at certain pure tones and intermediate frequencies….and more!

As you may know, from a patient’s perspective, doing the audiology test can be exhausting because hearing at threshold is exhausting.

When we communicate we like the speech signal to be nice and clear not at threshold (the point at which we may or may not hear), we simply do not like listening to voices are at thresholds (and will 100% tune out because that level of cognitive effort is too heavy) so let’s work out what level of speech is optimal for you!

šŸ’”Did you know the ideal level of speech in a quiet room for you is going to be so very different for you when you are in the presence of noise - whether it be pleasant ambient noise or background music or environmental noise like road traffic, grocery shop noise or hospital activity noise.

Visit your local audiology clinic for a complete assessment of your auditory abilities because we care about building sound connections.
