Endometrial-like tissue responds to hormonal changes just like the lining of the uterus. Around your period, this tissue sheds, but unlike menstrual blood, it has nowhere to go. The result? Inflammation, fluid buildup and irritation in the pelvis.

Pro surfer India Robinson is one of many athletes speaking out about the realities of living and performing with endometriosis. Her symptoms were severe: vomiting, fever, exhaustion and intense back pain. She often relied on "as many painkillers as possible" just to get through the day.

Talking about health as a young person can feel uncomfortable, especially when the experience is painful and debilitating. A recent study shares the voice of 25 people who grew up navigating endometriosis, revealing a common story of social stigma that left many to suffer in alone in silence.

This research highlights the need for greater awareness of endometriosis and open conversation for a condition that affects 1 in 10 women and people AFAB worldwide.
