Alopecia areata?

Have you heard of it?

Did you know that alopecia areata is not a cosmetic issue but rather an autoimmune disease? In fact, if you were to take a skin sample of alopecia areata you will see a swarm of immune cells targeting the base of affected hair follicles. This causes the hair follicles to stop growing and fall out. This can cause round bald patches on the scalp or even the whole loss of scalp hair (known as alopecia areata totalis) or even affect eyelashes and eyebrows. It is most severe it can affect all the hair on the body as well (known as alopecia areata universalis).

It is still poorly understood as to why alopecia areata actually occurs let alone why in one person is more severe compared to another. However, there are a range of treatment options available for each patient regardless of severity. Excitingly, there is a lot of research happening at the moment to find new treatment options so that we can find the best treatment option for each patient.
