* International presentation for spinal cord injury researcher *

The Kolling Institute's Professor Lisa Harvey will present the results of a unique clinical trial measuring the impact of early and intensive motor training for people with spinal cord injury.

The study involved 15 sites across seven countries, representing the largest clinical trial of a physical rehabilitation intervention for spinal cord injury.

The trial follows increasing discussion around spinal neuroplasticity and intensive motor training.

The presentation is part of the Clinical Trials Forum hosted by University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA. The forum is primarily for clinical trialists interested in methodology but all welcome.

🧠 TOMORROWS MEDICINE TODAY – DECODING PAIN IN THE BRAIN 🧠

Chronic pain affects so many of us - but could a small network of neurons in the brain hold the key to better treatment?

PhD researcher Caitlin Fenech talks with Prof James Elliott and Dr Matthew Doane about how the brain processes pain, what changes when it becomes chronic, and how understanding these circuits could transform treatment.

TOMORROW’S MEDICINE TODAY – RETHINKING LUNG CANCER

Lung cancer remains Australia’s deadliest cancer, but treatment is changing fast. In this episode of Tomorrow’s Medicine Today, Professor Nick Pavlakis explains how research and personalised care are reshaping what’s possible for patients.

In conversation with James Elliott and Matthew Doane, Nick breaks down how genomic testing helps doctors choose treatments that are more targeted, more effective, and better tolerated.

Instead of one-size-fits-all therapy, care is becoming smarter, more precise, and more hopeful.

NEWS NORTHERN SYDNEY LOCAL HEALTH DISTRICT NSLHD Main story Short blurb Festive celebrations throughout the district NSLHD’s festive celebrations in full swing

17/12/2025

The University of Sydney has announced a landmark $11 million philanthropic gift establishing the Paul and Katherine Gobits (Koh) Chair of Pancreatic Cancer Research, being the largest individual donation ever made to pancreatic cancer research in Australia.

This endowed Chair honours the legacy of Katherine Gobits and represents a transformative investment in accelerating the discovery of earlier detection methods, improving treatment options, and driving long-term advances in one of the most challenging and deadly cancers.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer mortality, often diagnosed at a late stage and associated with some of the lowest survival rates. This gift significantly strengthens Australia’s research capacity and creates a lasting platform for scientific breakthroughs that can improve outcomes for patients and families nationwide.

This milestone contribution highlights the powerful role of philanthropy in advancing medical research and shaping a future where pancreatic cancer is more effectively detected, treated and ultimately defeated.

* TOMORROW’S MEDICINE TODAY – AFTER THE HEART ATTACK *

The weeks after a heart attack are some of the most vulnerable for patients.

In this episode of Tomorrow’s Medicine Today, Professor Geoffrey Tofler joins Professor James Elliott and Dr Matthew Doane to unpack why triggers such as stress and sleep disruption can increase the risk of another cardiac event, and what can be done to reduce that risk.

The episode also highlights a new clinical trial at Royal North Shore Hospital looking at recovery and prevention. We are now seeking recruits for the study.
