I know it’s April fool’s day but I promise this is legit 😂

Tomorrow afternoon I am packing up my clinic and over the weekend will be relocating to 17-19 Rogers Street. I am SO excited about this because (a) I get to share the space with the fabulous team at Barham Chiropractic and (b) there are NO stairs for my clients to navigate.

As well as a physical change, there will also be a name change to Infinite Vitality and Health. There has been quite a bit of work behind the scenes to get this going including a new website https://infinitevitalityandhealth.org/ (please check it out).

In the next few months, I will begin to introduce some new services – all with a goal of supporting and promoting health in our local community. So watch this space!
I can’t wait to open the doors at the new clinic next Wednesday. I’ll share some photos and videos once I’m in!

I have seen a number of clients recently who are struggling with cognitive health. Cognitive disorders can range anywhere from brain fog and forgetting words through to dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

There are also numerous conditions that fall under the banner of functional neurological disorder, which I have sadly seen in a few young people recently.

As someone who lost my grandmother to early onset Alzheimer’s disease, I am passionate about preventing cognitive decline. And prevention is always better than cure.

For many, those first signs of forgetting words or names, or simply being excessively tired and feeling like they are walking through a fog, are ignored.

If this resonates with you, I would encourage you to not ignore these symptoms and seek help.

Naturopathic care is ideal at this stage as many of the things that lead to cognitive issues are modifiable. Yes, you have the power to change your destiny with making better choices. I can help guide you with this.

GOT FUSSY KIDS?
I’ve been working with a wonderful family recently who have come leaps and bounds with gut health, primarily by using food as medicine.

Mum, who once lacked confidence with food choices and cooking, is now a champion in the kitchen. She’s found clever ways to sneak good food into her very fussy son who had significant gut issues going on.

If you have a child with textural/taste sensitivities, you know how challenging it can be to get the good stuff in.

This mum grates/purees veggies into sauces and even sneaks legumes into sweet treats (see recipe below).

What are your favourite ways to help your kids eat nourishing foods? Share below – you might help another parent who doesn’t know where to start.

Here’s the Black Bean Brownie recipe I shared last year (seriously, divine!).

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬
345 g black beans (cooked)
3 eggs
60 g butter, melted (or coconut oil)
5 g vanilla extract
2 g sea salt
65 g cocoa powder
35 g coconut sugar (or sweetener of choice)
80 g raw honey
2 g baking powder
100 g dark chocolate (chopped and divided)
35 g sliced almonds

𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝
Preheat oven to 180ºC, and line a 20x20 cm baking dish with baking paper.
Add cooked black beans and eggs to food processor and process. Stream in melted butter. Let processor blend for about 60 seconds or until black beans are very smooth.
Add vanilla, salt, cocoa powder, coconut sugar, honey and baking powder to black bean batter. Blend until all incorporated, scraping down sides if needed.
Add half the chocolate to the brownie batter and pulse 5 or 6 times until mixed in.
Transfer batter to prepared baking dish and smooth into an even layer.
Sprinkle remaining chocolate and sliced almonds evenly over the top.
Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
Let brownies cool completely before transferring to the fridge for at least 4 hours before cutting into squares. Enjoy!

I often see clients when they are at breaking point, either looking down the barrel of medications or the medications aren’t working as they should anymore.

I personally have a strong family history of diabetes on both sides of my family, and I am determined to avoid the same diagnosis.

The earlier you can intervene in the progression of a disease state, the better the outcome. It’s not impossible to reverse the condition (far from it in fact), but my point is – wouldn’t it be better to prioritise your health NOW?

It’s fair to say that many people think they are bullet proof when younger. Making poor food choices, drinking alcohol and partying...these things are often celebrated and encouraged.

Having the strength to say no to these things and prioritise YOU can be challenging. But it CAN be done.

If you have a strong family history of diabetes, you want to act now. Look at your diet, sleep, exercise, sunlight and lifestyle choices and find ways to make positive change.

Remember, you don’t need to aim for perfection, but you can aim for improvement. You are the one who will reap the benefits in the end.

IF YOU COULD ONLY TAKE ONE SUPPLEMENT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
For me, it is and always will be the humble broccoli sprout.

The key constituent in broccoli sprouts is sulforaphane and it is a powerful compound that regulates inflammation and reduces oxidative stress at a cellular level. Better yet, it switches on hundreds of protective genes that are involved in all sorts of processes such as liver detoxification.

For those of you who may want to learn more, there is a heap of research that is readily available. In particular, look at the research around the protective benefits of sulforaphane when it comes to cancer.

My clients are often surprised how one (yes, just one!) supplement can have such a profound impact on their health.

If you want to optimise your health, broccoli sprouts are the way to go.

Two things to consider though:
1. Sulforaphane is found in only small amounts in broccoli, but broccoli has a whole heap of other goodies so eat it with abandon anyway!
2. Not all broccoli sprout powders/capsules on the market contain active Sulforaphane in therapeutic amounts. Remember my previous lesson on learning to read labels and looking beyond the hype!

Nearly every client of mine has had broccoli sprouts at some point because yes, it really is that good.

If you ever want to understand your genetic risk when it comes to diseases later in life, you need look no further than your own family history.

Ask your parents about your grandparents' health. Knowledge is power here.

And just because your parents or grandparents had a certain health issue, doesn’t mean you will get it. It just increases your 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬.

We all have the power to modify the expression of our genes. We can do this through our daily choices and behaviours, including diet, lifestyle, exercise, sleep, managing stress and perhaps most importantly finding our joy.

My clinical approach to working with clients always focuses on influencing our genes to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in order to reduce disease risk.

Remember, everything in our environment, including the food you eat, will have a conversation with your genes.

Nutrigenomics is my passion. And it is simple and effective.

One of my favourite clients, who has always typically been in great health but is continually looking at ways to optimise health as he gets older (he is currently in his 70s), wanted to do a microbiome analysis. We caught up recently to go through the results.

He had an amazing gut with a very healthy species count, which is very protective for health and wellbeing. But there were definitely some things that could be improved. He was surprised that most of this could be achieved by tweaking aspects of his diet, which he was totally committed to doing. There were a couple of things we did want to improve quickly, so a couple of very specific supplements were chosen for this reason. He will do a follow up test in 12 months time to check his progress and see what else he could tweak.

Microbiome testing is really useful in chronic conditions too, but as you can see it can be helpful in optimising your health.

Medications for this condition make millions each year for pharmaceutical companies, but do they actually do anything for our health? Are they solving a problem or creating a new one?

I appreciate this is a divisive topic, but my goal is always to optimise health without the need for medication. And in the majority of cases, it IS possible.

Firstly, you need to understand what the key drivers are for high blood pressure and then work on these. Sometimes this can be challenging because it will involve making changes to your diet and lifestyle.

But trust me when I say that it is totally worth it.

You really can’t put a price on your health and well being.

As a naturopath, I have helped many people to understand their unique key drivers, supported them through dietary and lifestyle changes and celebrated the wins when they have not only got their blood pressure back in optimal range, but have avoided medication entirely.

And before you ask, if you are already on medication, we can work with that too. The goal is that you won’t need it in the long run, but for some people, they do need a low dose to keep things stable.

Most of my clients have heard this terminology before, but it doesn’t really adequately describe what is going on in the gut.

What I mean by this, is the gut isn’t ‘leaky’ per se. If you imagine your digestive tract as a hose (from your mouth to your butt), that hose or pipe doesn’t have a heap of holes in it. What it has is a whole stack of ‘gates’ between each gut cell that can be open too much or open all of the time, and this can allow some undesirable substances to get through into your blood stream and cause you harm.

Common causes of leaky gut include medications, heavy metal/toxin exposure, alcohol use and poor dietary choices. (As an aside, whilst gluten is included in this, in my experience that Australian wheat is more at fault than other gluten containing grains such as rye and spelt and many of my clients thrive on these.)

Intestinal hyper-permeability (or leaky gut) is linked to literally every chronic disease state including diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, osteoarthritis and autoimmune disease, just to name a few.

Our goal is to strengthen the tight junctions (or gates), so they open and close appropriately. We do this through diet and lifestyle change and offsetting things we cannot change such as medication with some well chosen and effective supplements.

LEARNING TO LOOK BEYOND THE HYPE
Clients are often asking me what I think about a product they have seen online or on social media or perhaps have had recommended to them by friends or family. This happens regularly. Daily even.

What do I tell them?

That usually the marketing hype does not match the quality. They are also not individualised, and what may be good for someone else doesn’t mean it is any good for you.

Health is never found in the bottom of a supplement bottle. Yes, even the ones I use with clients!

Real health comes from the choices you make every day including the food you prepare and consume, the fluids you drink, how you move your body, your sleep quality, how you manage stress and, most importantly, how you enjoy your life.

Supplements CAN help, but they usually don’t solve the problem.

The best results my clients see are when they are ready to embrace true health and wellbeing and make positive changes for themselves and their family.

04/03/2026

I don’t know about you, but I can sometimes have my attention grabbed by some excellent marketing. But what I have learned over the years is to delve a little deeper beyond the hype and take a look at exactly what is being offered.

Let’s start with food.

My golden rule these days is that it should be as close to nature with as few ingredients as possible. This means I rarely shop in the middle aisles of the supermarket and my pantry is stocked with raw ingredients that I then make into yummy stuff. But if you don’t have the time or head space for this (yet), then always pick up the product on offer and read the ingredients list. If it has dodgy oils like canola, vegetable or other inflammatory seed oils, put it back and move on. It’s the same if you see any of the following: flavours, sweeteners, ‘E numbers’ or anything else you don’t recognise as an actual food.

Remember, real food literally talks to your body cells. Processed and dead food does not.

So if you are wanting to improve your health and well being, start with eating real food.
