Recently a large group of dentists gathered to hear two of our specialists talk about common dental issues. Stirling Hospital is committed to Medical Education, and we were told that this had been the first dental evening offered in the Hills for some years.

Dr Gabrielle Smart (Gabs) talked about 'Molar Mayhem - Managing Molar Hypomineralisation'. This is a very common paediatric dental presentation, a more common requirement for complex treatment planning in Gabs’sclinic than dental cavities. It causes significant concern for parents and their children due to very sensitive teeth that are challenging to manage. Gabs used case studies to show varying degrees of this condition and offered many practical tips about helping both the children and their parents with their anxiety.

Then Dr Sanjaya Gamage (Sunny) spoke on the topic “Wisdom Teeth at the Crossroads – Timing is Everything.” He explained that there is no single universal consensus on the ideal age for wisdom-tooth removal. However, we learned that earlier removal—before the roots fully form—generally carries significantly lower risk. At this stage, the procedure is usually simpler, associated with fewer postoperative complications, and patients tend to experience a quicker, smoother recovery. In most cases, this lower-risk window falls between the ages of 15 and 18 years.

Events like this would not be possible without generous support, and on this occasion Stirling Hospital would like to thank for their sponsorship of the evening.

For more information about Dr Smart and Dr Gamage, both of whom operate at Stirling Hospital, please visit https://stirlinghospital.org.au/dental-surgery/

World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. It is celebrated from 18 to 24 November every year.

The World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) 2025 theme is “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.”

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective and infections become increasingly difficult or impossible to treat.

This National Skin Cancer Action Week, is focusing on encouraging all Australians to make sun protection a daily habit to protect their skin from UV exposure and reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.

Often called our ‘national cancer’, Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer during their lifetime.

No matter your age, you can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer by using all five forms of sun protection when the UV level is 3 or above: SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK AND SLIDE

For more information, visit the Cancer Council website: https://www.cancer.org.au/

World Kindness Day promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself, and to the world.

If every Australian performed an act of kindness on World Kindness Day, we would have 25 million acts of kindness in a single day.

The possibilities are endless – today and every day, let's be mindful of the small acts of kindness that make a big difference.
