Sometimes different parts of our bodies connect in the most unexpected ways. A pair of small muscles at the base of the skull (re**us capitis posterior minor) has attachments to the dura mater, the fibrous covering of the brain and spinal cord. Tension in this muscle often results not only in headaches, but myriad other symptoms because of this connection.

Give this a try. Put your hands over your head with elbows bent 90 degrees. Open and close your hands slowly for 3 minutes. Is that difficult? Painful? Getting some numbness? You may have thoracic outlet syndrome, a problem where certain blood vessels and nerves get compressed. Symptoms can progress and be quite debilitating. Don't wait to get help. It's nearly always correctable.

Kinesiology taping is one of many supportive techniques I use in clinic. There is a major misconception about how taping actually works. The tape does not directly influence the muscles. The primary mechanism/effect of most taping applications is this -- The elasticity of the tape stimulates the mechanoreceptors under the skin, which sends messages to the brain, which sends messages back to the body modifying motor control. By varying placement, shape, tension, and directionality of the tape, a trained practitioner can create predictable responses.

Part of the body's elaborate system of maintaining balance and homeostasis is what's known as the Lovett Reactor system. Identified in 1905, these are relationships between the bones of the skull and pelvis, as well as among different vertebrae. Sometimes these paired bones will show the same motions, sometimes opposite, depending on the pair. Clinically, this means that problems in one bone can often be driven by its paired bone. For instance, if a person chronically has problems with their C1 in the upper neck, one should also address problems in its pair; the L5 in the low back.

Improper breathing mechanics can lead to compression of the lower spine. When the pelvis tilts forward and the diaphragm tilts back (typical poor posture), each breath, instead of creating stability for the spine, creates compression.

Going by several different names such as the lumbodorsal fascia or thoracodorsal fascia, the thoracolumbar fascia is a thick layer of fascia on the back of the body. It surrounds many muscles and serves as an attachment point for many others such as the lats and internal obliques. Sometimes, what we perceive as tightness of the muscles of the low back is in fact restriction of the thoracolumbar fascia. To determine if it's the fascia stopping you and not the muscles, here's a simple test. From a seated position, see how far you can twist to the left and the right. Now put your arms out in front of you, palms up, pinky to pinky, and again twist to the left and right. If you can twist further with your arms down, the fascia is limiting your motion. Consider getting evaluated by a good therapist if it's restricted. It can happen for many different reasons and the treatment varies depending.

Some body parts are clearly remnants of our recent ancestors. Such is the case with the dorsoepitrochlearis. In apes, it's a powerful shoulder muscle, crucial for climbing and knuckle walking. In humans, it's rarely found anymore -- and if found, isn't typically very big. Though some estimates have it in as much as 5-20% of the population, there have been fewer than 30 published cases of it in the last 200 years. If found, it connects the latissimus dorsi muscle to the upper arm or elbow (it varies) and is usually innervated by the thoracodorsal nerve -- the same nerve that controls the latissimus dorsi.

Not everything that limits shoulder motion is necessarily in the shoulder. We have long fascial continuities throughout the body sometimes called myofascial meridians. One, the spiral line, ties the opposite hip and abs into the shoulder. Restrictions anywhere along this line can impact shoulder stability and mobility. Here's a good DIY stretch for addressing the upper half of the spiral line. https://tbme.ch/2gxP. The yoga pose parivrtta trikonasana, or revolved triangle pose, is great for the lower half of the spiral line. Here's a video of that. https://tbme.ch/2gxQ

The sternocostal angle is the angle between the sternum and the ribs. Normally, this will be about 45°. That means the inside angle of the ribcage should be about 90°. Restriction and imbalance among the abdominal muscles often pull this angle wider which can result in poor diaphragm activation. A diaphragm that's bracing for weakness elsewhere in the body will often pull this angle in tighter making it more acute, limiting rib expansion.

Experiencing numbness around the pinky and ring finger? Try rolling out your lats. Wait, what? Yes, your lats. Restrictions in the lats often cause them to function poorly. Then, the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle spasms to provide support, compressing the ulnar nerve near the elbow. I see this several times per week.

Any of this sound familiar: Shoulder pain, 1st rib pain, thoracic outlet syndrome, pectoralis minor pain, neck tension, low back pain and unstable ankles? Those are all symptoms that can arise due to issues with the central portion of the sacroiliac joint.

Feeling like your knee isn't tracking right? Like you feel a pressure that builds in your knee when you bend it? Often this is due to spasm of the popliteus muscle. The popliteus rarely requires direct work, however. It usually spasms to compensate for issues with the other flexors of the knee, such as an inhibited upper gastrocnemius muscle, or inhibited hamstrings. Strengthening or activating those muscles will get the popliteus to relax in these cases.
