Midland Police Station has identified a growing trend in credit card offences in the Midland area involving EFTPOS machines.

Two to four suspects approach a shop employee to buy a product or service. One suspect will pretend to pay via mobile phone or card but this transaction will fail. Another suspect grabs the EFTPOS machine from the shop employee and manually modifes the transaction amount upwards before paying with stolen card details. The suspects then demand an immediate cash refund from the shop employee.

What to do everyday
• DO NOT hand your EFTPOS machine to any customer for any reason.
• Set an appropriate limit for refund or cashback for each EFTPOS terminal.
• Change your EFTPOS password/pin regularly. Keep your EFTPOS password/pin confidential.

What to do if a cashback is demanded
• DO NOT provide a cashback.
• Request security to attend to your shop.
• Ask for photo identification from the suspect(s). Ask for a contact phone number.
• Wait until the money has been paid into the business bank account. This will take a few days. Only give cashback once it is confirmed that extra money has been legitimately paid into the business bank account.
