Eamon’s journey with Usher syndrome is a reminder of something extraordinary. It is a reminder that the generosity and support of community powers the research, devices and hope to change the course of a child’s future.

“The Aussie Ear Bank is special to me, because it’s about more than just research - it’s about giving kids like me a future with hope.” Eamon Doak

Eamon, and his brother Kealan, were both born profoundly deaf due to a condition called Usher syndrome. The genetic analysis performed through The Aussie Ear Bank offers the opportunity for potential cures for conditions such as Usher syndrome, but to continue transforming lives, we need your help.

With your generosity, we aim to raise an incredible $2M by 2026, towards our 2030 goal of $10M. Every dollar raised will go towards establishing Australasia’s first and only Biobank solely dedicated to ear and hearing disorders, The Aussie Ear Bank.

This research will change lives, and we invite you to be part of it. Donate to the Gift of Hearing Appeal via the link below. Help us reach our target and give the most meaningful gift of all this Christmas - the gift of hearing. https://donate.earscience.org.au/?utm_content=sked_6939379cf33999e79d5574fb&utm_medium=social&utm_name=sked&utm_source=facebook

Ear Science Institute Australia welcomes and strongly supports Kate Chaney MP’s call to unlock the full potential of the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

As a national leader in ear and hearing research, we know firsthand how vital sustained, accessible and strategic research funding is to driving life-changing innovations. The MRFF was created to fuel exactly this kind of progress, but to deliver on its promise, the funding must be fully accessible to the medical research community.

Why this matters:

• Hearing conditions affect millions of Australians, yet remain under-recognised and under-funded.
• Greater MRFF access means faster translation of breakthroughs from the lab to clinics and communities.
• It strengthens Australia’s ability to deliver world-class medical research with real-world impact.
• It supports researchers, clinicians and institutes working to change health outcomes for generations to come.

We applaud Kate Chaney MP for championing this issue and advocating for a funding system that empowers researchers to do what they do best, improve lives.

At Ear Science, we stand ready to deliver the next generation of hearing innovations. Unlocking the MRFF helps make that future possible.

Heading to the ACDC concert tonight in Perth? Don’t let the volume leave you Thunderstruck!

Concerts typically range between 100 and 140 decibels, putting you at risk for conditions such as tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss.

What can you do to protect your hearing?
~ Wear ear plugs (your ears will thank you!)
~ Check sound levels using an app on your phone such as Decibel X
~ Move away from speakers
~ Take short breaks when possible

Enjoy the music and make hearing protection part of your concert essentials.

Does hearing loss run in families?

Yes! While noise exposure and aging are common causes, research now shows genetics can also play a role in hearing health, especially for middle-aged and older adults.

What should you do if someone you know is experiencing hearing loss?

✖️ DON'T
- Take it personally if they mishear or ask you to repeat.
- Speak facing away from them.
- Delay the conversation about getting help.

✔️ DO
- Be patient and understanding.
- Include your loved ones in conversations.
- Encourage a hearing check-up.

Understanding how to support a loved one is an important step in creating a healthy hearing future for everyone.

Experiencing a “blocked” sensation in your ears?

It could be the accumulation of too much wax leading to sometimes mild difficulties hearing, pain, itchiness or even ringing in the ear.

What should you do if you suspect a wax blockage?

〰️ It's best to avoid DIY treatment as cotton buds can cause more harm than good, pushing wax further down the canal.

〰️ For effective treatment, reach out to our team or book a wax removal appointment at one of our Lions Hearing Clinics today [see link in the comments below]
