Music Therapy Interview at 4EB Radio📻📡

During the interview, they discussed their thoughts about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) planning to reclassify music therapy starting next year, which have significant negative implications for music therapy participants, the music therapy industry, and the health system.

Story of a Music Therapy Participant

“The impact music therapy has made on my client is so significant. As he is non-verbal and has trouble understanding, registered music therapists have an amazing ability to communicate and connect with him. He can now do more simple everyday things because of music therapy.

He could never blow his nose, but the Registered Music Therapist showed him how to follow the music and how to smell a candle—something that he previously struggled with. Now, he can blow his nose with confidence.

My client is very quiet but always shows his excitement and passion for his music therapy sessions. He can now play ukulele, piano, and drums with love and passion.
We appreciate how music therapy helps improve my client’s quality of life every day.”

Story of a Music Therapy Participant

“Music therapy has been a transformative experience for my 13-year-old daughter, who is Autistic and has ADHD. After outgrowing traditional therapy, music became her therapeutic tool. She’s always loved music, and music therapy allowed her to express herself in ways that words couldn’t. It has helped her manage anxiety, frustration, and sensory overload while giving her a safe space to communicate emotionally.

Through tailored sessions, she’s built confidence, improved her focus, and found emotional release through rhythms, songs, and instruments. Music has played a crucial role in her mental health and well-being. Without it, I’m not sure she would be in the same place today. Music therapy has truly been a lifeline, offering her joy, peace, and self-expression in a way that no other therapy could.

I cannot understand why NDIS thinks Music Therapy does not meet the standards required for classification as a ”therapy“ under NDIS guidelines.  It has been the one therapy that has helped my daughter, and I would recommend it to other families facing similar challenges that we have.  I hope the NDIS reconsiders their decision.”
