School holidays don’t start with chaos but they often start with subtle changes.

Less routine.
More sensory input.
Higher regulation demands.

From a PBS perspective, early behaviour changes are often signals not escalation.

One simple strategy that helps:
Create a low-stimulation space at home: soft lighting, reduced noise, and access to headphones, where participants can decompress and regulate when sensory input becomes overwhelming.

💬 What strategies have you seen work well for participants during holiday transitions?

If you’re supporting participants who may benefit from proactive Behaviour Support during this transition, our team is here to collaborate.

The holidays often bring joy but they also bring disrupted routines, reduced structure, and unexpected changes that can be challenging for many participants.

When routines shift, we often see:
• Regression in daily living skills
• Increased emotional dysregulation
• Reduced independence and confidence

This is where Occupational Therapy plays a critical preventive role.

OT supports participants to:
✔ Maintain functional capacity during routine changes
✔ Adapt daily tasks to new holiday schedules
✔ Strengthen emotional regulation and coping strategies
✔ Reduce the risk of post-holiday regression

Early support helps participants stay grounded, capable, and confident even when life feels less predictable.

✨ Telehealth Occupational Therapy available nationally

During the holiday season, environments become louder, brighter, busier, and less predictable. For many participants, this sensory overload directly impacts behaviour.

What may look like “challenging behaviour” is often a response to:

-Increased noise, crowds, and visual stimulation
-Disrupted routines and sleep patterns
-Heightened emotional and sensory demands
-Reduced opportunities for regulation and recovery

From a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) perspective, behaviour is communication.

Our PBS practitioners work with participants and families to:

-Identify sensory triggers in real time
-Adjust environments before escalation occurs
-Introduce proactive regulation strategies
-Build practical behaviour plans that work in everyday settings

PBS is not about reacting to behaviour after it happens.
It’s about understanding why it’s happening and supporting participants before overload takes over.

If behaviour tends to escalate during the holidays, early support can make all the difference.

December can amplify everything.

For some participants, the holiday season brings more than celebrations—it brings heightened emotions, disrupted routines, and added family pressures. What feels busy for many can feel overwhelming for others.

When participants reach their emotional limit, Social Work becomes more than a service.
It becomes the stabiliser—helping everyone stay grounded, heard, and supported.

One of the most common challenges we see this season is emotional strain.

Participants may experience:
• Increased anxiety or low mood
• Emotional sensitivity or overwhelm
• Withdrawal or shutdown
• Stress caused by sudden changes in routine

Our Social Workers support participants by creating emotional anchors—clear, practical strategies that help regulate emotions, restore a sense of safety, and guide individuals and families through this demanding season with steadiness and care.
