When I’m seeing my clients, here are some of the signs we look at together to check that baby’s feeding is going well..

👉 A happy and calm baby after a feed is a great sign! They should naturally release the breast on their own when they are finished but not always.

👉 Before feeding, you might notice their hands are in fists, but as they feed, they often relax and open up.

👉 Once your milk is in, bub will suck rapidly at the beginning of each feed to trigger a letdown. Once flowing, they typically suck once or twice per swallow, often making a faint gulping sound. After swallowing, you might hear a soft “k-ah” as they exhale. During a strong letdown, expect a rhythmic pattern of suck, swallow, breathe.

👉 You should notice at least five heavy wet nappies a day, frequent bowel movements, and a steady weight gain to ensure bub is getting plenty of milk.

👉 Remember, how long your baby takes to feed doesn’t directly correlate with how much milk they’re getting! As babies grow, they often become quick feeders.

👉 In the early days, it’s a good idea to take note of how many feeds bub has in a 24-hour period and the spacing between feeds. But don’t stress over the time spent at the breast—feeding apps that track minutes can drive you a little insane!

As always, trust your instincts. You’ve got this! ❤️

Feel like you're feeding around the clock?

You probably are!

Breastmilk is very easily digested - which makes breastfed babies feed more frequently compared to formula-fed babies.

It can take as little as 1.5 hours for your baby's tummy to fully process their breastmilk after a feed!!

Feeding around the clock can be exhausting!! Make sure you're nourishing you too mama

I worked with a client recently who had been breastfeeding her daughter for the last two years! She was ready to wean and needed some guidance on how to do it successfully. She had a lot of grief around ending the beautiful journey, but it was the right time for both of them.

I reminded her of the amazing job she had done to get past two years of breastfeeding, and that the letting go of this moment will make room for the light of another about to begin.

So I just wanted to remind you too - where ever you are on your breastfeeding journey, you are doing an amazing job! And whether it ends at two weeks or two years, you are still worthy.

I’d love to hear where you all are on your breastfeeding journey? Share with me below 👇🏽

Was… TRUSTING MY OWN INTUITION!!

As a new mum, I found it challenging to sift through all the info out there. Techniques for this, recommendations for that! And while some of it was helpful, sometimes it was all consuming, I didn’t know if I was doing any of it right.

That’s when I learnt to trust my own intuition. As mothers we have a profound innate intuition to tap into. Once I started leaning on and listening to my intuition, my postpartum journey started to get easier. Of course it was still challenging at times, but I felt more in control.

After all, nobody knows your baby like you do!

What’s the biggest thing you learnt from your postpartum journey? 👇🏼

There are many breastfeeding positions and no one best way to hold your baby for feeds.

Some mothers use a range of positions, while others have a fave and stick to it, and use it often. No matter which position you choose, you can help your baby attach and feed well by positioning them close, so they can take a good mouthful of your breast!

I’d love to hear which positions you use or have tried, and if you have any questions about how to position baby properly, send me a DM 💗

It’s so important to feel empowered on your feeding journey!
