Say hello to this week’s Human of Health – Renae ✨

For almost 20 years, Renae has dedicated her career to caring for mob as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker, and the role she is in now is by far her favourite yet!

As part of our Birawan Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) program, Renae works alongside midwives to ensure Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women, or families who identify as having an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander baby, receive culturally safe, respectful maternity care.

“Having cultural support is important and improves health outcomes by helping to close gaps in services,” Renae said.

“Since the implementation of my role in Birawan, less than 1% of women have fewer than 5 antenatal appointments, whereas previously 7.4% of women attended less than 5 antenatal appointments.”

Renae is passionate about giving back to community and supporting families through every stage of pregnancy. In her role, she ensures any traditional cultural needs are respected and integrated into a woman’s healthcare, she does health promotion, community engagement, and also helps with referral pathways.

“Growing and nurturing families is important to me as I am a mother myself.”

Thanks for all you do Renae, we are so lucky to have you!

This is a reminder of the importance of vaccination following several additional confirmed cases of measles across Queensland.

Five additional measles cases have been identified in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Wide Bay, Central Queensland and the West Moreton regions.

Several Sunshine Coast locations have been identified as exposure sites. For a full list visit: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/newsroom/alerts

Members of the public who were in these areas, on these dates, need to be alert for symptoms of measles for up to three weeks from the exposure date.

The initial symptoms can include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore red eyes. This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face and then becomes widespread over the body.

If you have any of the measles symptoms, contact your GP or ED. It is very important to call the medical practice or ED first if you think you might have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading it to others.

For more information about the measles virus call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).
The list of exposure sites and times is being regularly updated.

For a full list of exposure locations, visit: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/newsroom/alerts

Meet Natalie, one of our dedicated nurse educators helping to shape the next generation of nurses. 👋

As a Clinical Nurse-Clinical Coach, Natalie helps build confidence, strengthen skills, and ensure our student and graduate nurses are thriving and providing the best care possible.

She loves being part of the dynamic team in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) at SCUH's Operating Rooms.

Her role involves delivering education and simulation-based training, as well as supporting nurses who are buddying with new staff and students.

“I’ve always felt drawn to healthcare - caring for people during their most vulnerable moments is a true privilege.”

After many years working clinically, she says the transition into education has been a great move.

“One of the most rewarding aspects is witnessing those “lightbulb” moments when someone grows in confidence or skill, it’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of their journey."

🥵How many times have you heard today that 'It's a bit warm'?

When it’s very hot, your body works hard to stay cool by sweating, but sometimes that’s not enough. This can lead to dehydration, nausea, headaches, or even vomiting. Heat-related illness can be really serious.

Here’s how to keep cool and stay safe:
💧 Drink plenty of water (2 to 3 litres a day)
👵 Check in on loved ones (especially older adults and pregnant women)
🏃 Avoid heavy exercise in the hottest part of the day
🌳 Stay in air conditioning or find shade
🧴 Be sun safe. Hat, sunnies, long sleeves, sunscreen every 2 hours.

If you or someone you know feels unwell due to the heat:
Call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice, or 🚑 In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
