Research from my own thesis, alongside existing studies, highlights that surf therapy can positively impact both social and cognitive development. Participants often leave programs with increased self-belief, improved patience, and a stronger sense of control over their lives. With the right support and a safe environment, surfing can empower young people to overcome challenges and grow beyond their circumstances. ❤️

Time in the ocean combines physical activity, nature, and community—three powerful elements for wellbeing. Drawing on my thesis research and established literature, surf therapy has been shown to support emotional regulation, build resilience, and activate positive brain responses linked to reward and motivation. For many participants, it offers a healthy and meaningful outlet for stress and personal challenges. 🏄🏽‍♀️☀️

What my own empirical research showed:

Surf therapy uses the ocean as a structured environment for personal growth, connection, and emotional development. Based on my own thesis research, supported by established academic studies, participation in surf programs can significantly improve confidence, strengthen social relationships, and foster a deeper sense of belonging. The process of learning to surf encourages individuals to step outside their comfort zones, face challenges, and build trust in both themselves and others. As a result, surfing becomes more than a physical activity—it becomes a meaningful pathway for navigating life’s challenges. 🌊💪🏾

Surf Therapy is more than just learning how to surf 🌊

It’s a supportive, guided experience that uses the ocean as a tool for personal growth and mental wellbeing. Various studies (including my own thesis, along with many others) have shown that ocean-based programs can significantly improve mental health, emotional regulation, confidence, and social connection! Through structured sessions in the water, participants build resilience, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging. All while having so much fun!

The movement of the waves helps calm the nervous system, the physical challenge strengthens coping skills, and the shared experience creates genuine connection and belonging.

It’s not about being the “best” surfer. It’s about showing up, trying something new, and discovering what you’re capable of — one wave at a time !🤍

Why a sunset surf is the best thing you can do for your mental health!🏄🏿‍♀️🌅

During my time at the beautiful TALAY retreat in Thailand I had the privilege to take a few guests for a surf lesson during sunset! The reactions were phenomenal! They were all so happy afterwards and said they would feel calm, grounded and you could see the surf glow in their faces! So I asked myself: What is the science behind this?

A sunset surf can benefit your mental health because rhythmic wave motion and physical activity activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress hormones! In the same time exposure to natural light and expansive ocean views enhances mood-regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin. The combination of mindful focus, sensory immersion, and awe from the changing sky promotes calm, improves emotional regulation, and supports overall psychological well-being!

How cool is that?! I hope you are inspired now to try surf therapy at the TALAY in Thailand or with me in Australia!

Lots of love! 💙
Laura

There’s something about a sunrise that hits different.
And it’s not just the beauty—it’s biology.

As the first light hits your eyes, it signals your brain to stop producing melatonin (the sleep hormone) and start increasing cortisol—in a good way. This gentle cortisol rise helps you wake up, focus, and feel more alert. Morning light also boosts serotonin, which regulates mood and sets your internal clock for the day ahead.

It’s your body’s natural way of saying:
"You made it. Let’s begin again."

Watching the sunrise isn’t just peaceful—it’s powerful.
A small act that can shift your whole mindset. 🌅

As cheesy as it sounds, life really does come in waves.

There are the calm ones where you can float, breathe, and feel the sun on your face. Then there are the rough sets—grief, loss, stress—that crash in and pull you under when you least expect it.

You don’t get to control the ocean. But you can learn how to ride it.
That’s where resilience comes in. You build it slowly, sometimes painfully, by wiping out, paddling back, and finding your balance again. Over time, you learn when to duck, when to dive, and when to stand up and ride.

That’s also why surf therapy can be so powerful. It’s not just about catching waves—it’s about reconnecting with your breath, your body, your strength. It reminds you that no matter how unpredictable things get out there, you’re more capable than you think.

The waves won’t stop coming. But you can get better at surfing. 🏄🏽🫶🏼

Just looking at the ocean changes your brain!

Research shows that spending time near “blue spaces” like oceans, lakes, and rivers lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), decreases heart rate, and increases alpha brain waves - patterns linked to calmness, creativity, and focus.
Wallace J. Nichols, marine biologist and author of Blue Mind, explains how these natural waters can positively affect our mental health and well-being.
Even a few minutes spent gazing at the water can reduce anxiety and help reset a busy mind.
Nature isn’t just beautiful — it’s medicine.
