One of the biggest struggles I hear in clinic:
“My IBS is so bad in the mornings, I end up spending most of my time on the toilet.”
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone, it's more common than you think.
As humans, we’re naturally designed to have a bowel movement first thing in the morning.
When you wake up, your digestive system wakes up too. This morning urge is triggered by a natural reflex called the gastrocolic reflex.
The difference? Someone without IBS will have regular, pain-free p**ps, while someone with IBS may experience bloating, cramping, and funky p**ps.
In other words, your body is just amplifying a natural process that it wants to do anyway- eliminate waste.
So instead of cutting out more foods, blaming dairy & gluten, or blaming yourself, the key is to tune into your symptoms and support your body to do what it naturally needs to do.
This will make your mornings easier:
✨Slow down- Don’t rush. Give yourself time for breakfast and a relaxed toilet routine.
✨Mould your p**p so you can p**p daily - Think of it like playdoh. Certain foods can help thicken or soften your stool depending on what your body needs.
✨Don’t skip meals- this throws off your blood sugar, and your hormones & IBS won’t like that.
✨Check your eating rhythm- Are you snacking all day or overeating in the afternoon/evening? That can upset your gut in the morning.
✨Add variety- Eating the same 5 foods on repeat can weaken your gut health. Your gut thrives on diversity!
✨Support rest & digest- Deep belly breaths before eating to support your nervous system so you can digest your food properly ✨Food is not the enemy- Often, it’s not what you eat but HOW you eat it.
Keep going & supporting your body. You’re one step closer to living a life without IBS.
