We hear the term ‘counselling’ a lot these days, but what exactly is it?

• A collaboration between a qualified counsellor and a client (or clients) in a confidential and safe space – including the online space

• A way to enhance your self-understanding

• A space to work through concerns, and to make sense of difficult times in life

• A space where mental health and wellbeing can be promoted

Working with art in therapy can be a way to explore difficult situations and relationships.

‘Seeing’ connections between people, places and objects on paper can help to begin to make sense of what’s been on your mind.

Drawing skills aren’t important for working this way. Stick people are good enough if they can communicate what you need them to!

I’m a creative arts counsellor who supports people to make sense of their experiences using art as a therapeutic tool.

Art can be a helpful tool to become more aware of your feelings and emotional weather.

When we are aware of how we’re feeling, we can be clearer about what we need – for ourselves, and in our interactions with other people.

Working with art in counselling has helped clients become more aware of their feelings and emotions, to make more helpful choices.

Do you enjoy expressing yourself creatively but feel self-conscious?

Maybe your skills have even been criticised or judged by others in the past, and left you feeling self-critical about your abilities?

When we feel judged about what we make or express creatively it can feel that, not only is our product or expression being evaluated, but we are also being judged as a person.

I work with clients using art in therapy, and from a Person-Centred approach.

Images are not judged or seen as a reflection of a person’s sense of worth, but as therapeutic tools.

Clients have shared that they’ve experienced new perspectives and shifts with issues they’ve been feeling stuck with.

Did you know that there are many different approaches to using art as a tool in therapy.

I’m a registered Person-Centred counsellor (PACFA) and certified Person-Centred Creative Arts counsellor (APCCA).

Counsellors who work in this way believe it’s important to understand a person’s experiences from the person’s perspective rather than offering interpretations about their images or artworks.

Blue might represent ‘calm’ for one person or ‘depressed’ for another.

Do you have a lot going on right now and find it hard to see things clearly?

Working with art in therapy has helped some clients find important insights and clarity when they’ve been feeling overwhelmed and over-committed.

Art can be used as a tool in therapy to challenge beliefs – like ones connected to Perfectionism.

Some people avoid or procrastinate because they worry that what they do won’t meet very high personal standards. It can become a pattern that impacts other parts of their life and a barrier to fully participating in life.

Working with ‘imperfect tools’ – like painting with sticks – can help challenge beliefs around Perfectionism, and can be an entry point into exploring it more in therapy.

Do you need support, but struggle to find words to talk about your problems?

Art is another way to communicate – and you don’t even need to be ‘good at art’, making stuff or able to draw to work with it in therapy.

I'm a professionally-qualified counsellor who has also taught and practised as a designer for many years, so I’m able to draw on this unique skill set to offer clients a choice to work creatively in non-verbal ways, as well as talk therapy.
