Like many across Sydney, we are feeling deep sadness and shock following the events at Bondi Beach.
When something like this happens, the impact often extends well beyond those who were directly involved. Children and teenagers, in particular, can respond in many different ways. Some may ask more questions, seem more worried about safety, or show changes in behaviour or sleep. Others may appear unaffected at first and react later. All of these responses are understandable.
If you are supporting a child or young person, it can help to:
• keep explanations simple, honest, and age-appropriate
• follow their lead with questions rather than offering too much information
• limit repeated exposure to distressing news or conversations
• provide reassurance through calm routines, connection, and consistency
It is also important to acknowledge that adults have their own reactions too. Feeling shaken, sad, or unsettled is a very human response. You do not need to have everything “together” for your child. When adults feel supported, it becomes easier to support the young people in their care.
If you or your child are finding things difficult, you are not alone. Reaching out for support is a positive and proactive step.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and with the wider community during this heavy and unsettling time.
