Thank You to Our Christmas Toy Hand‑Over Supporters! ✨🎄

The Hornsby Woodworking Men’s Shed is proud to have once again shared the joy of handmade toys with our community. This year’s handovers to the Salvos & Wesley Mission, with support from Bendigo Bank, and the Palmdale Group were made possible thanks to the generosity and teamwork of so many.

A heartfelt thank‑you to our incredible toy makers – affectionately known as Santa’s Helpers – and to Ivan Bosnich, our dedicated Toys Coordinator, for guiding the elves and keeping the sleigh on track!

We also extend our appreciation to the Mayor, Councillors, and Steve Fedorow, Director Community & Environment, for their ongoing support and encouragement. Your presence and partnership remind us that community spirit shines brightest when we work together. 🌟

From all of us at HWMS, thank you for helping us make Christmas brighter for families in need. ❤️

Great to have such amazing support from our council, Councillors and the mayor.

HWMS AGM 2025 – A Celebration of Continuity, Community, and Courage

Today’s Annual General Meeting was a wonderful reflection of everything that makes the Hornsby Woodworking Men's Shed special. Under the steady leadership of President Ian Mackay, the existing committee was unanimously re-elected—bringing continuity, experience, and a shared commitment to the year ahead.

We were especially honoured by the presence of our eldest member, Jim Kelso, who at 99 years young attended despite a recent fall. His resilience and dedication continue to inspire us all.

We were also grateful for the support of Cr Janelle Macintosh, Deputy Mayor of Hornsby Shire, whose presence reaffirmed the strong ties between the Shed and our local community.

With a great turnout, plenty of good conversation, and a classic sausage sizzle to round things off, the AGM was more than just a meeting—it was a celebration of mateship, momentum, and shared purpose.

Here’s to another year of building, learning, and supporting one another.

Do you have a possum that is eying up your roof as a home? Then provide it with a desirable alternative. We have plenty of possum boxes for sale at the Shed. $60 could ensure you and the possum get a good night's sleep.

This last week has been so busy and exciting for our Shed. Each year members of our Shed produce between 4oo to 500 toys that we pass on to the Wesley Mission & the Salvation Army, they get half each, to distribute to young people in our community who otherwise may not receive a gift at Christmas. On Tuesday we had our hand over to the Wesley Mission and on Friday to the Salvo's. Unlike previous years we decided to make the handover a celebration, recognising not just the toy makers (our Santa's helpers) but each aspect of the process.
Timber- This starts with our wood rack, not a stack of new timber from the environment via the sawmills, but timber harvested from kerb-side clean-ups, house knockdowns, deck & carport replacement...all preloved timber.
Our Shed- Owned and leased to us by council, our Shed provides us with dry, secure and powered premises where we meet and work together.
Machinery - we have many hand tools, however without the array of powered machinery including lathes, table saws, thicknessers, bandsaws etc we would not be able to produce the volume of toys the machinery enables us to make. Most of this machinery is purchased using grants from local businesses, including the Bendigo Bank, Hornsby RSL and Magpies Waitara.
Charities - the Wesley Mission & the Salvos work on the coal face of our community in need and can readily identify those who need the toys we produce.
So this week we invited and warmly welcomed:
Our council -thank you Steve Federow, Director of Community & Environment & Councillor Sallianne McClelland.
Bendigo Bank - Sharon Franke, Community Development Manager & Michele Ferris, Branch Manager
Hornsby RSL - Daniel Yun, Compliance & Experience Manager, plus Jaynie, Lisa & Andy.
Magpies Waitara - Andrew Veldon, CEO.
Wesley Mission - Will Van Trump, Desleigh Davies, Caroline Harquero
Salvation Army - Captain Sean Li
This year, after feedback from the charities, our range of 'toys' was more diverse as the young people the charities care for include teenagers. To meet this new criteria, in addition to our usual toy range, we also produced timber pens, jewellery boxes, earring hangers, timber mobile phone amplifiers and Jenga Blocks
