Your first pregnancy appointment can feel exciting… and honestly a bit overwhelming.

So here’s what’s actually happening behind the scenes 👇

At your first antenatal visit we’re usually checking:
• Pregnancy dating and if there’s one or more babies
• Discussing your symptoms
• Your medical history + medications
• Screening options (including genetics)
• Blood pressure and baseline risks
• Blood tests
• Mental health screening
• Planning scans + ongoing care schedule

What I want every patient to leave with:
✅ clarity on what to expect next
✅ confidence to ask questions
✅ a plan that suits your pregnancy — not a generic checklist

The best part of obstetrics and gynaecology isn’t the “big dramatic moments”.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s the quiet ones.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The patient who finally gets an answer after years of pain.
The reassurance that turns panic into calm.
The plan that makes someone feel safe again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Women’s health deserves:
• time
• evidence
• compassion
• and clinicians who listen properly
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re new here - I’m Dr Andrew.
I’m an obstetrician & gynaecologist, and this page is about clear, honest education without fear-mongering.

Bleeding in early pregnancy can be common but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Spotting can be harmless, but it can also be a sign that something needs urgent assessment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What can be normal?
• Light spotting after s*x
• Implantation bleeding
• Cervical irritation (your cervix is extra sensitive in pregnancy)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What needs assessment ASAP
• Bleeding + one-sided pain
• Bleeding + dizziness/fainting
• Bleeding that’s heavy (like a period or more)
• Tissue/clots
• Shoulder tip pain
• Any bleeding with significant cramping
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Early pregnancy bleeding can be linked to:
• miscarriage
• ectopic pregnancy
• pregnancy of unknown location
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What a clinician may do next:
- Blood tests
- Ultrasound
- Anti-D if you are Rh negative (in certain scenarios)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re bleeding and unsure you’re not overreacting. You can always reach out to your care provider for specific advice 🫶🏼

Labour Myths:
Labour always starts with your water breaking
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In reality, only around 8% of women will go break their water before labour starts. Of these women 70% will go into labour within 24hrs of their waters breaking, 85% will go into labour within 48 hours of their waters breaking and 95% will go into labour within 96 hours of their water breaking.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Did you water break or did you have contractions first?

Heavy menstrual bleeding is one of the most common reasons women seek help… and also one of the most dismissed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Heavy bleeding can look like:
• bleeding through clothes
• needing to change pad/tampon every 1–2 hours
• passing large clots
• fatigue/low iron
• planning life around your period
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We assess causes including hormonal patterns, fibroids, adenomyosis, bleeding disorders, etc.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Treatment options can include:
- iron support
- hormonal treatment (including IUD options)
- non-hormonal medications
- further investigation if persistent
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You don’t need to tolerate it. You need answers.

Every birth is different and every birth is special. It doesn’t matter how many years that I’ve been doing this for, you and your care is unique.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have a relaxed consulting style, I want you to feel comfortable to discuss any and all concerns with me at any point. I prefer to be called Andrew rather than Dr Zuschmann and I love to joke around with you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your birth choices are yours to make and I am here to support you and your decisions!

As birth approaches, uncertainty, anticipation and responsibility intensify. This along with the increase in hormones in preparation for birth and it can leave you feeling emotional and sometimes overwhelmed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Support and reassurance from your healthcare team are part of good antenatal care so make sure to have a chat to them about how you’re feeling.

If you’ve had a caesarean before, read this
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After a previous caesarean, both VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) and repeat caesarean can be safe options depending on individual circumstances. Success rates vary and depend on the reason for the caesarean in the first place. VBAC success rates in Australia sit between 60-80%.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What matters most is informed, individualised decision-making not pressure in either direction 🫶🏼

One thing I wish more parents understood about recovery
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Postpartum recovery isn’t linear. Physical healing, hormonal shifts and emotional adjustment happen on different timelines. Some days will feel easier than others and that is normal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It takes 40 weeks for you to grow and carry that beautiful little baby, so it makes sense that it takes time to find your new normal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is no “bounce back”. There is only recovery and it takes time.

Hi, I’m Andrew

I've been working in women's health for over 20 years, and became a specialist in 2005. I've undertaken broad training in general obstetrics and gynaecology, with additional training in advanced minimally invasive surgery (sometimes called "Keyhole Surgery") and infertility, attaining the additional qualification of Masters of Reproductive Medicine (UNSW).

One of the most satisfying aspects of my practice is being able to care for you throughout your reproductive journey from conception to baby.

In my practice, I like to have a relaxed consulting and communication style. You won't see me wearing a tie, and I prefer to be called Andrew, not Dr Zuschmann. I want you to feel comfortable, and I encourage you to ask me any questions you may have about your condition.
