While nursing is a rewarding profession, it can be mentally and physically draining. There are times when it is hard to give your body exactly what it needs. However, in order to take care of others, you must first take care of yourself.

-Listen To Your Body: Nursing is a very physically demanding job. You are on your feet all day, carrying heavy objects and people, and constantly walking to check on patients. That kind of physical stress can put its toll on your body. You have to listen to your body to make sure you aren’t hurting yourself.

-Deep Breathing: Mindful deep breathing is one of the best ways to de-stress of all. The effects are immediate and noticeable. It is also the root of many relaxation practices. Yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, and much more have great connections with deep breathing.

-Use Your Social Network: People are social beings. It is in our DNA to want to be around other humans. We aren’t meant to hide ourselves away or become totally self reliant. Use your social network to help you relax.

If you can’t think of many things in your life that you’re grateful for, you should think of attainable goals to reach for that would make you grateful.

The success to career progression often depends largely on adopting a pro-active approach and, "putting yourself out there." This may seem daunting at first, but the BCNA has some advice to help get you started.

1. Take ownership of your career.
If you find yourself stuck in a rut, craving change or feeling under challenged, it's important to take responsibility and ownership of your career.

2. Start adopting a more proactive approach, focusing on all the benefits it will bring. Be prepared to:

-Come out of your comfort zone
-Approach people you don’t know
-Ask for what you want
-Always be on the lookout for opportunities
-Do your research
-Get turned down or told no - but never let this put you off!

3.Make time to think about your career - schedule time in your diary frequently to sit down and think about your job, career, options and aspirations.

4. Information gathering - take time to research the sorts of roles you’re interested. This is an essential part of planning your career.
You can do this by:

-Searching the internet
-Reading relevant journals or publications
-Joining professional networks
-Speaking to your employer
-Using your network and speaking to peers
-Finding out about initiatives, schemes or pilots
-Exploring career frameworks or skills frameworks

5. Know your job market -
Make sure you research the job market in your chosen field. Study vacancies on job websites and sign up to receive alerts from websites, agencies and specific employers.

Try to identify:
-What jobs are out there at the level you want?
-Which roles are in demand?
-Are they in demand in your desired geographical area(s)?
-What sort of experience, skills or qualifications are required?

A week to celebrate neurodiversity!

This week is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. It aims to get rid of these stereotypes and misconceptions and encourages people to be more accepting of neurodivergent people and give them the support they need.
The purpose of Neurodiversity Celebration Week at BCNA this year is ‘to help the world to understand, value and celebrate the talents of neurodiverse minds’. We want to work towards transforming how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported by providing schools, universities, and organisations with the opportunity to recognise the many talents and advantages of being neurodivergent, while creating more inclusive and equitable cultures that celebrate differences and empower every individual!

Wear Yellow and Raise Awareness

March into Yellow encourages our broader community to show their support for the invisible illness by adorning themselves in the colour yellow. It is also a fun way to raise funds for Endometriosis Australia who support endometriosis education and research.

1. Incorporate yellow into your daily wardrobe throughout March and raise funds! Set up a profile, post on your blog and spread the word so people can cheer you on and support the cause!
2. Get your workplace or community involved and have a March into Yellow Day on Friday the 24 March 2023.
3. Adorn yourself in yellow and start a conversation about Endometriosis and raise awareness.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, meet nurses whose innovative approaches to patient care have profoundly changed human health.

1. Florence Nightingale (1820-1910).
Widely recognized as the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale is best known for her role during the Crimean War (1853–1856) as a manager of volunteer nurses and advocate for improved sanitary conditions in military hospitals to help prevent infection.

2. Elizabeth Kenny (1880-1952).
The importance of perseverance in the face of controversy was exemplified by Australian nurse Elizabeth Kenny in the early 1900s. With no official record of formal training, Kenny is believed to have been self-trained. She began her career as a home nurse providing care to anyone in need and later opened a cottage hospital for patients suffering from polio.

3. Sister Jean Ward (1958).
Phototherapy, or the use of visible light for the treatment of jaundice in the newborns, is one of the most common nonroutine therapies used in newborn conditions – but this was not always the case. Sister Jean Ward of Rochford General Hospital in Essex, England, became aware of the benefits of phototherapy in 1956 when she would wheel infants afflicted with jaundice outdoors into the hospital courtyard against the doctors’ wishes.

4. Nurses Caring for Patients Living with AIDS (1980s)
At the dawn of the AIDS epidemic, when the disease was spreading faster than information about the disease could be obtained, it was at a great personal risk that nurses stood by patients as they faced painful symptoms and, many times, death.

5. Fatu Kekula (2014)
When student nurse Fatu Kekula’s father became frighteningly ill and hospitals in Liberia were at full capacity, Fatu had no choice but to treat him and eventually the rest of her family, at home with limited resources. Plastic trash bags, a pair of rain boots, a rain jacket and a mask transformed into the daily uniform that kept Fatu safe from contracting what would later be identified as the Ebola virus.

Nurses change lives. And that changes everything.

Just like any mental illness, eating disorders are not the fault of the individual. There is no single identifiable cause of eating disorders – they are believed to be the result of genetic, psychological, environmental and social risk factors.

While eating disorders are more likely to start in adolescence, they can affect anyone at any stage of life.
Eating disorders cause significant mental and physical distress, and require treatment with a range of health professionals. With support, full recovery from an eating disorder is possible for anyone, no matter their age or length of illness.

Finding support at the earliest possible time for you
It’s important to remember that recovery from an eating disorder is possible for everyone, no matter the length of their illness.
Early intervention for eating disorders is sadly not the norm, which means that the majority of people who experience and recover from an eating disorder have been experiencing symptoms for some time, sometimes even decades.

At BCNA, we work to ensure all our service users have an avenue to find support at the earliest possible time for them. Sometimes it may take multiple tries to find something that works, and that’s ok. The important part is to keep trying.

Nursing fatigue is not the same as burnout, but it can contribute to burnout. Review these tips to help prevent and treat nursing fatigue.

1. Rule Out an Underlying Medical Condition. Self-care is critical to survival. Before addressing other issues, nurses get a physical and have some baseline labs drawn. There are many reasons for fatigue and exhaustion, and some of those are underlying medical conditions.

2. Self-Assessment. Take an objective look at your life. When you can identify the factors that are creating fatigue and exhaustion in your life, you have a greater chance of treating it and preventing it. Take a hard look at your career and whether you feel inspired or exhausted by your current job. Your mental health has a significant impact on your family and the rest of your life.

3. Stress Management. Nurses are chronically exposed to emotional and physical stressors that take a toll on their physical and mental health. Stress management is a key to maintaining your health and well-being. Stress is a normal part of everyday life, but chronic stress can lead to physical and mental dysfunction.

4. Adjust Your Schedule. Nursing is a versatile profession that offers many options and opportunities. If you're feeling fatigued where you're working, talk to your manager. You may be able to take some time off or adjust your schedule to give you more time for rest.

5. Understand Your Spending Plan
Sometimes nurses put up with a hectic schedule to cover their expenses. Take a strong look at your spending plan and get rid of extraneous and frivolous expenses that contribute to your stress and fatigue.

Outside of work, if you're able, get 30 minutes of exercise a day or 150 minutes or more in a week. Stay hydrated by drinking enough water so your urine is a light straw color. Get between 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night in a darkened room. Each of these steps can help support your physical and mental health and prevent nursing fatigue.

Nursing jobs in Australia is one of the most rewarding career paths a person can undertake. It consists of multiple skill sets and responsibilities, such as assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for patients according to accepted nursing practice and standards, working in consultation with other Health Professionals and members of health teams, and coordinating the care of patients.

Benefits of working as a registered and district nurse in Australia with BCNA:

1. Empower your days with optimum work-life balance
2. Enjoy diverse opportunities for professional development
3. Focus on multiple career paths and opportunities
4. Improve your immigration prospects
5. Work in a safe and secure environment

A few days ago, the Australian drug regulator – the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) – surprised experts around the world when it announced the approval of certain psychedelic treatments.*

From July this year, the TGA will permit authorised psychiatrists to prescribe psilocybin (found in “magic mushrooms”) for treatment-resistant depression, and M**A (found in “ecstasy”) for post-traumatic stress disorder.

There’s excitement about potential access for more people in need; about the prospect of being able to offer patients more suitable and tailored treatment without the constraints imposed by clinical trials and rigid protocols. And then there are concerns that evidence remains inadequate, and moving to clinical service is premature; that incompetent or poorly equipped clinicians could flood the space; that treatment will be unaffordable for most; that formal oversight of training, treatment, and patient outcomes will be minimal or ill-informed.

There are many other questions worth grappling with over the next few months, including those regarding appropriate oversight and patient protection, affordability and public expectations and awareness.

To those planning to work in this space in Australia, we urge you to start or continue climbing the steep learning curve with curiosity, to organise reputable training, support, and resources from those already doing the work, and to establish appropriate systems of governance, oversight, and transparency.

Tuesday Tips from BCNA:

Finding ways to stay hydrated at work is one of the most important things you can do for yourself while on the job. From the minute your feet hit the halls of the nursing unit, you are on the go.

Assessments, admissions, discharges, med passes, and more take up your physical and emotional energy. As a result, many nurses find it challenging to find time for self-care, even to the extent of just staying hydrated.

Your body works best when hydrated. Water, Hydration and Health, water, or its lack (dehydration) can influence cognition.

Mild levels of dehydration can create changes in your mood and ability to think clearly, which will, in turn, lower your overall nursing effectiveness.

Water helps your body and mind work its best. When you hydrate, exercise, and practice other self-care techniques, you will fight off nurse fatigue.
