Frankincense
Also known as the True or Frank incense, it has one of the richest histories of incense and fragrance in the world. It has been part of mankind’s life for thousands of years and was once considered more precious than gold. Versatile, it has been used over the centuries to treat ailments and ensure wellbeing. Since Biblical times, frankincense has been used extensively for its anti-bacterial, infection and virus killing properties.
Grown predominantly in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, the trees range from 2 metres to 7 metres tall. The sap is gathered from incisions made in the tree’s trunk and branches. Dried gum is harvested only when it has hardened and settled into a state that is known as “tears”. The highest grade of frankincense is translucent green or white and is known as “Royal Hojari”. It was originally grown for the Sultans of Oman, Nobility and those of high rank.
