Should you wash your hair less often when you’re experiencing hair loss?
Short answer: NO. And here’s why ⤵️

The hairs you’re seeing fall out today actually shed because of something that happened about 3 months ago.
So skipping washes won’t reduce your overall hair fall — it just means those loose hairs sit on the scalp longer… waiting for enough friction to finally come out.

💡 Washing doesn’t cause shed. It simply releases hairs that were already going to fall.

Keeping your scalp clean supports:
✨ Better follicle health
✨ Less inflammation
✨ A fresher environment for new growth

So please don’t fear your wash days — they’re not the enemy.
If you’re noticing more shedding, let’s focus on the cause, not the shampoo.

✨ Struggling with a flaky scalp?
You are not alone — and the good news is that flakiness is one of my favourite conditions to treat.

Once I make a clear diagnosis and pinpoint the exact cause, treatment is often simple, straightforward, and results can be fast and dramatic.
Nothing makes me happier than seeing patients finally get relief after months (or years!) of trying random products that were never targeting the real issue ✨

Low ferritin and iron can cause hair loss.

So how can you most effectively increase your iron and ferritin and help resolve any related hair loss?

- ✅ Take iron supplements every second day
- ⬆️ absorption with vitamin C, beta carotene and onion and garlic 🧄
- ❌Do not block absorption. Keep iron at least an hour away from: beer 🍺 wine🍷 tea 🫖 coffee☕️ chocolate 🍫 grapes 🍇 high-in-calcium foods like dairy 🥛 or any zinc supplements.

Low iron stores (ferritin) is one of the most common reasons for hair loss, but what most people don’t realise is that a level that would be considered OK for general health is not adequate if you are experiencing hair loss.

From a general perspective your ferritin needs to be greater than 30 µg/L

But the studies on hair loss show us that it needs to be at least 70 µg/L to help prevent the excessive shedding

Check this in your next blood test 🩸

Myth: hair transplants alone are a permanent cure for hair loss

Unfortunately this is not the case. Hair transplants are fantastic- BUT without some other intervention you will continue to lose the natural hairs in that area. The transplant can then look very unnatural and too gappy.

You need to do something to maintain the hairs you naturally have and thicken them too.

Understanding this is so important, and I am shocked how many people who have previously had hair transplants are misinformed about this matter.

A Trichologist can help guide you in maintaining and thickening your natural hair as effectively as possible.

I regularly help patients to thicken their hair and improve their scalp condition before having transplant surgery.
I also regularly advise patients who are post-transplant how to best look after their hair and scalp to maintain their hair fullness.
