What great findings!! One of our most successful programs 😀
Over 22 publications have demonstrated the positive impact that Secret Agent Society can have for neurodivergent kids. Now, a new study has shown that the social-emotional learning program can have a positive impact on parents too!
Given that parents go on the fun, spy-themed learning journey alongside their child, researchers in Ontario, Canada were curious if they would experience benefits too.
After monitoring both child and parent outcomes when Secret Agent Society was delivered to autistic children in the community, the researchers found that parents reported improvements in their parenting practices and mindfulness by the end of the program.
Positive parenting practices also boosted the impact of mindful parenting on child emotion regulation. So, when parents learnt how to support their autistic child and pay attention to their behaviours in a non-judgemental way, their child had a bigger boost in their own ability to regulate their emotions.
The study suggests that the practices taught in the program benefit both parents and kids. When parents become more confident in understanding their child’s behaviours and how to respond to them, their kids start feeling more calm, more often too!
