Sometimes life is full.

For me October was chocka block.
School holidays, work commitments, moving house and some illness thrown in for good measure. 🫠😆

And the things i had planned to work hard on got side tracked.

An unexpected move,
a change of career direction,
an unexpected opportunity that wasn’t part of the plan.

Things go off course sometimes… and it’s important to monitor how your body registers these unexpected changes. For some people this will trigger massive stress responses, anxiety, overwhelm and burnout.

Normally for me, exercise is the one constant that keeps me grounded.

The non negotiable, the anchor in the stormy weather - but lately even exercise was tough to squeeze in.

And I felt it, the stress, the stagnancy, the tension build.

My excuse was that I didn’t have time but today I knew just had to squeeze it in where possible. And that meant a 6am walk on a Sunday morning today in amongst other commitments.

This is my reminder to you that managing your mind, is of equal importance to managing your body.

Movement is essential.
We are water.
Stagnant water putrefies.

We need to move, our body is designed to move - it helps shift toxins, our lymphatic system, our digestive system, builds strength.

Mental health is physical health.
If you’re wanting success, movement is non negotiable.

Building business, managing change, facing large challenges requires tenacity, flexibility and endurance.

If your body can’t cope, your mind won’t either.

Look at you absolutely killing it in your business!… but wait, what’s with that subtle feeling you’re getting that it will all fall apart?

Those obsessive thoughts that you can’t let go of… that feeling that you don’t come from a wealthy family so you must be doing it all wrong.

I see you baby girl.

Pain and Pleasure

Our brains are hard wired to seek pleasure. Especially at the subconscious level.

It moves us away from what has been experienced as painful and towards pleasure.

The funny thing is that what feels good to one person, might feel like hell to another.

For example for one person, doing their taxes might feel amazing because they know they will get money back into their pocket - or they feel good about paying taxes because they know it contributes to the betterment of society at large. But for someone else it's pure pain knowing that they need to pay money that they may not have.

As you can see, it all relies on the meaning, or the context that we associate with a task as to whether we enjoy it or not. The hard part is that sometimes our body has a visceral response to something it doesn't want to do because it has caused pain in the past. This can sometimes be labelled by psychologists to be a 'trauma response' - the bed memory was stored in the body and acts as a trigger later down the track.

The cool thing is that we can re-wire our responses to various stimuli. Many successful entrepreneurs say things like "do the hard thing first" or "just do it" but it might not be that easy.

Here's something fun to try:
- Write the thing down you need to do that you are resisting doing or speaking about with someone.
- Write down why it might feel painful.
- For each reason you've written why it might feel uncomfortable, write a reason why it will be fun, beneficial or good to do the thing... what success you may have from doing the thing.
- Lastly cross out all writing about the reasons why you don't want to do it and re-read the positive reasons why you should do it.
- Give it a go and see if the emotional charge behind the 'painful activity' has been diffused.
