Breastfeeding can be quite daunting those first few weeks and you are not alone.

I like to explain it to my patients & clients as a tunnel with a light at the end and hurdles along the way, with some mums having more hurdles than others.

Remember it will get easier and help is there if you need it, and if it doesn’t work out in the end. Just know you have tried your best and your mental health is the most important thing. Fed is best!!!

Sleep is a crucial part to our health, it is just as important as good nutrition and physical activity.

Lack of or poor sleep quality is detrimental to our physical and mental health.

A lot of what I teach my clients actually relates to our sleep as well.

We all try our hardest to be the best parent we can and at times we feel we are failing. When in actual fact we are not.

Parenting is a tough journey and we all go through all the emotions during it (anger, sadness, joy, happiness etc.). Each emotion is as important as another and we all go through times we feel we are losing it, forgetting things or burning out.

Evidence shows if you meet your child’s emotional needs 30% of the time that is enough. So if you missed something today it’s ok it wasn’t part of the 30%.

We often don’t give ourselves credit for what a fantastic job we do!

Did you know that a babies brain is only 25% developed at birth and continues to grow to 80% by 3yrs and 90% by 4yrs.

This is such a huge development our little ones do in those first years of life. So it’s important they are having adequate sleep 💤

So Daylight Savings begins in a few days in some parts of Australia!!!

You may be happy for an hour of extra daylight, or dreading when it begins.

If you little one is already an early riser that hour later sleep in might be great for you.

What can you do to assist your little one with this change in time. Gradually bring your child's schedule back 15mins every couple of days. So this includes wake ups, naps, bedtime and feeds. After about a week or so your little one will be back in line with the new time zone.

Did you know???

Sunlight exposure in the morning actually improves our sleep. We get this amazing chemical released called serotonin with sunlight exposure. Serotonin is a natural mood stabiliser that controls our well being and happiness. Your brain needs serotonin to make melatonin. Melatonin is a chemical that helps with sleep and regulates sleep and awake cycles.

So I recommend to my clients open those blinds in the morning and get that natural sunlight in.

Indirect sunlight exposure for our little ones works wonders for their sleep. Getting outside in the fresh air, having a tea or coffee outside in the morning will help your sleep and mood too. ☀️

Bringing a baby home from hospital can be such an exciting time, but can also be quite daunting.

Newborns don’t know the difference between night and day as their circadian rhythm hasn’t kicked in yet (this starts to develop around 6-8weeks).

Knowing when your baby is starting to get tired can make the settling process much easier.

Newborns on average will probably get tired after about 60mins of being awake. Some tired signs might include; pulling at ears, yawning, jerky arm and feet movements, frowning, arching backwards. If you start seeing these signs it’s time to start settling your bub to sleep as an overtired baby can be quite hard to settle.

Singing to your little one has a huge range of benefits. It helps the bond between a parent and child, as well as gives your little one a sense of belonging and awareness.

Studies have shown singing helps reduce maternal stress and helps with sleep. 🎶 🎵 Incorporating a nursery rhyme or song in your little ones sleep routine is something I recommend to help with their sleep and settling. 💤
