We won’t solve obesity, diabetes, or metabolic disease with outdated models. We need biology-based, metabolism-centred care that works with the body — not against it.
A new paper in Cell Metabolism highlights why we’re stuck in endless nutrition debates — and what we should do differently.
1️⃣ Stop arguing about single nutrients

2️⃣ Focus on how the body actually works

3️⃣ Measure what truly matters

4️⃣ Personalise care

5️⃣ Turn science into real-world solutions

Thank you to Epilepsy Action Australia for sharing our upcoming FREE information evening — we’re so grateful for your support in raising awareness of treatment options and empowering Australians living with epilepsy.

Epilepsy is the oldest and most established therapeutic use of the ketogenic diet, first introduced in the 1920s. Its effects on brain energy metabolism are also why similar approaches are now being applied in conditions such as Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Traumatic brain injury, Mental health conditions, Migraine and ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Epilepsy Action is pleased to share a free community information evening hosted by Dr Deepa Mahananda, GP and Director of Sydney Low Carb Specialists in Castle Hill.

This educational event will focus on ketogenic therapy as an adjunctive option in epilepsy care, featuring neurologist and epileptologist Dr Tania Farrar.

The evening will cover current evidence, mechanisms of action, safety considerations, and lived experience from a young person with absence epilepsy and his father. The aim is to provide balanced, medically supervised, evidence-informed information for people living with epilepsy and their families.

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are life-saving and remain first-line therapy for many individuals with epilepsy. However, long-term use can be associated with metabolic and systemic side effects in some patients.

Depending on the medication and duration of therapy, reported concerns in the literature include:
• Weight gain and insulin resistance (e.g. valproate)
• Dyslipidaemia
• Reduced bone mineral density
• Hepatic enzyme alterations
• Cognitive and mood effects
(See: Perucca E. Lancet Neurology 2005; Verrotti et al. Epilepsy Research 2011; Mintzer & Mattson Epilepsy & Behavior 2009.)

Ketogenic dietary therapy is not a replacement for medication in all cases. However, in selected patients under specialist supervision, it may have the potential to reduce seizure burden and in some cases allow medication adjustment — always guided by a treating neurologist.

Our information night will explore how modern care can balance pharmacotherapy, dietary therapy and comprehensive monitoring.

Did you know there are five variations of the Ketogenic Diet which have been published in medical literature as effective treatments for diseases that have an underlying metabolic dysregulation, such as epilepsy, cancer, and Alzheimer’s?

Our experienced dietitian, Kate Oetsch, will cover:

• Differences between classical ketogenic therapy, Modified Atkins and other therapeutic variations
• Calculating macronutrient ratios appropriately
• Supporting adequate growth in children and adolescents
• Micronutrient supplementation strategies
• Managing side effects
• Supporting families with practical, sustainable meal prep and planning

Without professional guidance, ketogenic therapy may carry risks including nutrient deficiencies, gastrointestinal disturbance and other complications.

Modern ketogenic therapy is not simply “high fat eating.” It is structured medical nutrition therapy.

This session is ideal for wanting to understand what safe implementation involves.

Ketogenic therapy is now recognised as an effective, evidence-supported approach for drug-resistant epilepsy, helping reduce seizures by improving brain energy, calming overactive neurons, and supporting overall brain function.

In general, the diet can always be considered as long as there are no clear metabolic or mitochondrial reasons not to use it.

We are honoured to welcome Dr Tania Farrar, Specialist Neurologist and Epileptologist, as keynote speaker for our upcoming information night on Wednesday 11th March.

Dr. Farrar has presented research in Australia, as well as overseas, and has been 1st Author on publications including articles on the assessment of patients with seizures. She is undertaking further study and research on the role of ketogenic diet therapy in refractory epilepsy and hopes to establish an adult ketogenic diet therapy clinic in NSW.

On the night she will present:
• The anticonvulsant mechanisms of ketogenic therapy
• What current clinical evidence shows
• Where ketogenic therapy may fit within modern epilepsy management
• Appropriate clinical monitoring and safety considerations

A valuable opportunity to hear directly from a neurologist working at the forefront of epilepsy care!
