Continuing with our intros, introducing our Paediatric Psychologist, Veronica Engel!

Veronica has experience not only caring for children and adolescents, but families and adults as well. She takes the time to understand her patients’ individual perspectives, reactions, and behaviours to construct evidence-based strategies to provide mental relief, a sense of control, and overcome challenges.

Veronica is familiar with many medical conditions including various types of anxiety, depression, personality disorder, and gut-brain disorders.

Veronica’s previous working experience has led her to work with patients from Japan, Chile, and Austria which makes her knowledgeable in regard to cultural norms. In addition, she is currently conducting research on gut-brain disorders and the role of psychology in obesity.

It's been a while since we have introduced our team members, but we are back & this week we’ll be introducing another team member - Dr. Shoma Dutt, a Paediatric Gastroenterologist!

Dr. Dutt is a passionate and considerate paediatric gastroenterologist who dedicates her time to care for children with gut disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Coeliac disease, and gastrointestinal complications of cystic fibrosis. She is also trained to perform paediatric endoscopies and colonoscopies.

Dr. Dutt previously completed the master’s in medicine (Paediatric) Programme at the University of Sydney and is an active researcher and clinician at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. She is particularly interested in developing new treatments for children with IBD and advocating for the use of biological therapy in these patients. In her spare time, she can be found teaching medical students at the Hospital.

Our 2nd introduction for today is another Paediatric Gastroenterologist, Dr. Cheng Lee!

Dr. Lee currently specialises in caring for children and adolescents that present with gastrointestinal disorders such as coeliac disease, eosinophilic oesophagitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and failure to thrive amongst many other conditions. He also regularly performs paediatric upper GI endoscopies and colonoscopies as part of his practice.

Dr. Lee is proficient in English, Mandarin, and Malay which allows him to care for children and families who may not be completely fluent in English!

Dr. Lee’s training has taken to Ireland and various hospitals in NSW and ACT within Australia. Eventually settling in Sydney, Dr. Lee is a lecturer at both the University of Sydney and Macquarie University and enjoys teaching medical students and has also received the Australian Postgraduate Award for the research potential of his research project.

We’re almost at the end of first week of winter season, the time of the year when we need to take care of our immune system a bit more! So today we are introducing one of our Paediatric Allergist and Immunologists, Dr. Jessica Lai!
Dr. Lai’s area of expertise is managing paediatric allergies, particularly with food allergies, and allergic rhinitis. Aside from allergies, she is also well versed in immune deficiency disorders including eczema, and autoimmune diseases. She did her paediatric training at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s hospital.
Dr. Lai graduated from Monash University and is also currently working as a staff specialist at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. She can also be found conducting research as she is currently assessing the outcomes of patients with multiple nut oral food challenges.

This afternoon’s introduction goes to our one and only Clinical Geneticist, Dr. Bernadette Hanna!
Dr. Hanna’s work serves to use new findings in genetic research and apply it to patient care. She is particularly knowledgeable regarding connective tissue disorders, genetical prenatally detected conditions, chromosomal abnormalities, single-gene disorders and other genetic conditions that affect children. Dr. Hanna not only provides diagnosis and treatment, but also works with families to manage genetic conditions with the latest genetic technology.
Prior to specialising in clinical genetics, Dr. Hanna completed her training in paediatrics at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Her work has taken her all across Sydney from Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick, to Liverpool Hospital.

When not caring for patients, Dr. Hanna enjoys camping with her 3 children and one day hopes to visit Northern Territory and the Centre of Australia.

Our introduction this morning will go to our second Paediatric Respirologist and sleep physician, Dr. Chetan Pandit!
Dr. Pandit is an expert in treating children that present with complex airway disorders as well as difficult-to-control asthma, cystic fibrosis, and persistent coughs and infections. He also specialises in paediatric sleep medicine and is able to care for children with excessive snoring, parasomnias, and assess candidacy for adeno-tonsillectomy in the case proving/disproving obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr. Pandit is actively involved in academia as he conducts research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in addition to running the fellowship program and serving as a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney.

Our introduction for today is our most senior Accredited Practising Dietitian, Dr. Fiona Arrowsmith!
Dr. Arrowsmith earned her PhD from the University in Sydney in 2006 and has been managing newborns to adolescents in regards to nutritional care. Her clinical experience has led her to work together with families to improve the lives of children with various medical conditions such as growth faltering, developmental disabilities, renal diseases, and paediatric intensive care among others.

Dr. Arrowsmith has a strong passion for learning as she continues to attend conferences and seminars to improve her practice.

She has been a senior clinical dietitian at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead for more than a decade and regularly overlooked research and quality improvement projects while making time to lecture and supervise students.

We’re back again with our first introduction for today, this time with another one of our exceptional Paediatricians, Dr. Archana Prasad!
Dr. Prasad has spent more than a decade caring for children and infants in both Australia and in India. She has not only worked in major cities like Sydney, but also in rural towns within NSW. Dr. Prasad is especially familiar to caring for newborn infants as her previous experience was in the Neonatal unit. In addition, she is involved in the quality improvement of the Neonatal department.

Dr. Prasad is fluent in Hindi, Kannada, and Telegu in addition to English, which allows her to care for a patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Outside of working as a paediatrician, she can be found teaching medical students, or spending time at home with her family.

Today’s first introduction is our paediatric nephrologist, Dr. Blake Sandery.

Dr. Sandery works closely with families and their children to address paediatric kidney disorders such as high blood pressure, electrolyte abnormalities, chronic kidney diseases, bed-wetting and many more.

Dr. Sandery graduated from the University of New South Wales and received her diploma in child health from the University of Sydney shortly after. She regularly keeps up to date with new treatments and procedures by attending nephrology conferences. She is currently conducting research on kidney injury and the impact of microbes on the kidney.

Today’s 1st introduction will feature one of our Accredited Practising Dietitians, Nisha Thacker!

Nisha uses her family centered approach to identify individualised nutritional needs, develop personalised medical nutrition plans, and help separate nutrition facts from fiction.

She is trained to provide nutritional interventions for adults and children with various medical conditions including gastrointestinal issues such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (includes Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis), irritable bowel syndrome, Coeliac disease, food intolerance, vegetarian/vegan nutrition, and diabetes amongst many others.

Nisha has studied Nutrition and Dietetics in India and Australia and has lived in India, Canada, and Australia. These experiences and opportunities have not only solidified her belief that “You are what you eat” but also helps her to work with families to create meal ideas that tie in with cultural values.

Nisha’s passion for patient care and education has led her to continue her studies. To better understand the fascinating relationship between food, nutrients, dietary pattern, gut bacteria and gastrointestinal health, Nisha is now undertaking PhD at University of Newcastle.

We would like to introduce our one and only Neonatal Paediatrician, Dr. Rajesh Maheshwari!
Dr. Maheshwari specialises in treating newborn children as well as infants who are less than one year of age in areas such as growth and development, feeding, sleep habits, bowel habits, and many others. He also works together with mothers to address potential medical issues during their pregnancy.

Aside from working at Children’s Health Hub, Dr. Maheshwari can be found at Westmead Hospital conducting research, teaching students, and working at the neonatal intensive care unit. With over 20 papers published in world leading journals such as the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, Dr. Maheshwari is dedicated in improving the lives of newborn children, particularly by addressing issues in oxygen flow, body temperature, and nutrition.
