Meet Dr Harry Gasper, our Medical Oncologist at Cancer Care Noosa.

We recently sat down with Dr Harry to hear more about his approach to patient care and his perspective on the role of collaboration in modern medicine.

When speaking about caring for patients, Dr Harry emphasises the importance of seeing beyond the diagnosis. As he explains, “take into account the person in front of you is a human being, not somebody defined by their diagnosis. For me one of the most important parts of my conversations with patients is about their social history, finding out who they are, where they have come from, what their attitudes to health are and what is important to them when facing a diagnosis that may or may not be curable."

He also highlights the broader impact that cancer can have on a person’s life, noting the need to consider the “wider impact of the disease on their physical, social and psychological health,” and reminding clinicians that “you can’t ignore the other people in the room - the family or carers.”

Dr Gasper believes the same thoughtful approach applies to the healthcare team itself. In his words, “medicine is a team sport, none of us are capable of or should be thinking they are capable of looking after someone on our own. As we learn more and more about the human body and wider impact of disease on the body in a complex society we need each other to be able to find the best outcomes for patients. Communication is key and remembering to be as compassionate towards our colleagues as we are our patients."

Big news for our Manning Great Lakes community!

Cancer Care Manning Great Lakes is now open in Taree, bringing vital cancer treatment services closer to home. For many local patients, this means no longer having to travel long distances like to Port Macquarie or Coffs Harbour for ongoing care.

Gary, one of our patients, recently shared with 7NEWS Coast how this new centre transformed his experience following a month of treatment melanoma diagnosis.

As our Centre Manager Emma Longhurst explains:
"The worst thing is you travel an hour at the least, you have your treatment… you're in pain, and then you've got to get back in the car and do it all over again."

This new centre is about reducing that burden - while delivering the same high-quality care patients deserve.

A new clinic has opened in the Manning Great Lakes, bringing cancer care to the region.

We'll have the details tonight from 6pm.

A warm welcome to our two new Clinical Haematologists joining the team at Cancer Care Northern Beaches.

Dr Suraya Naidoo has trained and practice haematology in several countries since 2008, including working within one of Sydney's largest haematology clinical trial research units. She is committed to walking alongside her patients throughout their journey, providing clarity, reassurance and evidence-based care during what if often a challenging time.

Dr Stephanie Talam has joined the CCNB team having completed her training in Sydney Australia, with both clinical and research interests in her current work. She works collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive, patient-centred care.

Their addition expands the care we can provide to patients with blood cancers and haematological conditions, supporting our commitment to delivering compassionate, accessible care to the Northern Beaches community.

Puppy love at Cancer Care Noosa!

We were so excited to welcome three gorgeous 4-month-old Smart Pups Assistance Dogs in training to our Noosa centre. These little black Labradors brought the biggest smiles to our patients, their families and our staff - and enjoyed plenty of pats and cuddles along the way.

The visit also gave the pups valuable experience in a healthcare setting as they work towards becoming assistance dogs for children and young people with special needs. "Meeting a variety of people and becoming familiar with new smells, sounds and equipment supports their development and confidence." says Smart Pups Coordinator following their visit.

We can't wait to have them back for more visits - and to meet the older dogs who are nearly ready to be matched with their new families for some final training on site.

Thank you Smart Pups Assistance Dogs for brightening our day and for the amazing work you do!

Did you CCA utilises tattoo-free radiation therapy across all centres?

Using advanced Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT), a specialised 3D camera system monitors your position in real time with sub-millimetre accuracy. This means we can deliver highly precise radiation treatment without the need for permanent tattoos, which have traditionally been used to align positioning over multiple treatment rounds. For many people, those small tattoos became a lasting visible reminder of their cancer journey.

SGRT also enhances safety. The system continuously tracks your position and will automatically pause treatment if unexpected movement is detected. Set-ups are faster and more precise, meaning less time adjusting and more confidence in your care.

For breast cancer patients, when SGRT is combined with breath-hold techniques, radiation exposure to the heart is reduced - lowering the risk of heart disease later in life. This is technology designed not just for effective treatment now, but for your long-term health and comfort.

Since 2024, all Cancer Care Associates treatment machines have utilised SGRT. We believe tattoo-free treatment represents the standard of care - because caring for you means thinking about every detail, both during and beyond treatment.

My name is Jacob, and I’m a medical physicist with Cancer Care Associates at Moreton Bay. While I grew up in Brisbane and did my university studies there, I then did my medical physics training at CCA Riverina in Wagga Wagga, where I relished being part of a small team providing clinical support to that radiotherapy department. Part of the role is performing return-to-service testing on the radiotherapy treatment machines following any major repair or intervention, and part of the small team dynamic is that everyone needs to be involved in every part of the physics support role. This really instilled in me an appreciation of how my work directly impacts patient outcomes, as our teamwork was essential to getting the machines clinical again and minimising down-time and the flow-on effect to patients. I have since had the incredible privilege of assisting CCA’s expansion into QLD, my home, where I can continue to do my small part in ensuring our patients continue to receive cutting edge treatments. I take great pride in contributing to the cancer treatments at CCA Moreton Bay, in providing confidence for the clinical staff that the radiation prescribed for the patient is being delivered safely and accurately.

Ever wondered what happens after your planning CT scan at CCA MB?

Your Radiation Oncologist prescribes your radiation dose and outlines the tumour target volume to ensure precision accuracy when treating your cancer. They will also outline normal tissue to avoid to reduce side effects. Our Radiation Therapist will then design a radiation plan to meet our doctors prescription. Our physicist will perform quality assurance checks on the treatment machine to ensure what is planned is accurately delivered.

Everyone works as a team to give you the best quality care.

Check in at Cancer Care Griffith.

The team at CCG are excited to be creating a photo wall in both the chemotherapy treatment room and the staff room, helping showcase our team spirit and the moments that make CCG such a special place to work.

See here the team proudly marked Cancer Nurses Day with their signature purple-themed photo, and celebrated Daffodil Day, where members volunteered to help sell daffodils in support of the Cancer Council - a wonderful opportunity to engage with the community and raise awareness.
