NSW ADHD Prescribing Reforms – What's Changed and What's Coming!

Big changes are happening for ADHD care in NSW, and they're long overdue. Here's what you need to know:

Stage 1 – NOW LIVE (since 1 September 2025)
Trained GPs can now represcribe ongoing psychostimulant medication for patients aged 6+ who already have an ADHD diagnosis and are stable on treatment — without needing a formal shared care arrangement with a specialist. Over 800 GPs have become "continuation prescribers" so far, and more than 5,000 patients have already benefited with over 18,000 scripts filled.
GPs need to complete an endorsed training course and apply for a General Authority through NSW Health.

Stage 2 – COMING FROM APRIL to JULY 2026 (TBC)
This is the big one. A smaller number of GPs will be trained as "endorsed prescribers" — authorised to actually diagnose ADHD and initiate psychostimulant medication. EOIs are open now, with prioritisation happening through February and training starting around March 2026. Regional and rural GPs are being prioritised.

This is a genuinely significant reform. Patients have been stuck on long waitlists paying huge out-of-pocket fees just to get scripts renewed. GPs are well placed to manage stable ADHD — we do it every day with other chronic conditions.
