Psychosocial disability is NOT the same as a mental health condition. Here's the difference πŸ’™

A mental health condition = your clinical diagnosis (schizophrenia, bipolar, PTSD, severe depression)

Psychosocial disability = the FUNCTIONAL IMPACT on your daily life β€” your ability to work, maintain relationships, manage your home, and care for yourself

Not everyone with a mental health condition has a psychosocial disability. But for those who do, the NDIS can fund supports β€” including HOUSING.

πŸ’‘ Key fact: In 2022, the NDIS Act was amended to recognise that EPISODIC and FLUCTUATING conditions can still be considered permanent. You don't need to be unwell every day to qualify.

Conditions that commonly lead to psychosocial disability:
πŸ”Ή Schizophrenia
πŸ”Ή Bipolar disorder
πŸ”Ή Major depression (severe/persistent)
πŸ”Ή Schizoaffective disorder
πŸ”Ή Severe PTSD
πŸ”Ή OCD
πŸ”Ή Severe anxiety disorders

The NDIS assesses FUNCTION, not diagnosis. The question isn't "what's your condition?" - it's "how does it impact your daily life?"

At OneJesus Care, we support people with psychosocial disability across Sydney. 100% non-profit, recovery-focused. πŸ’™

Wondering how much SDA costs? πŸ’° The answer might surprise you β€” it's more affordable than you think!

SDA is funded through your NDIS plan. As a participant, you pay a reasonable rent contribution of approximately 25% of the Disability Support Pension:

πŸ’° Your rent: ~$147/week (~$7,662/year)
πŸ’° The NDIS pays the provider: the rest

Here's what the NDIS pays per year for new-build metro properties (2025-26):

🏠 Improved Liveability
1-bed apartment: $42,847/year
Group home: $35,040/bed

🏠 Fully Accessible
1-bed apartment: $56,940/year
Group home: $43,800/bed

🏠 Robust
1-bed apartment: $62,050/year
Group home: $47,450/bed

🏠 High Physical Support
1-bed apartment: $94,170/year
Group home: $69,350/bed

βœ… SDA covers: The building, specialist design features, and maintenance
❌ SDA does NOT cover: Support workers (that's SIL), groceries, utilities, personal items

πŸ’‘ Your rent contribution is deducted FROM the total β€” it's not an extra cost on top!

At OneJesus Care, we offer SDA High Physical Need Support certified accommodation β€” the highest standard. 100% non-profit means every dollar goes to quality housing. πŸ’™

Applying for SDA? πŸ’‘ Here are 7 tips to MAXIMISE your chances of approval!

1️⃣ Start Early β€” 6-12 Months Ahead
Don't wait until it's urgent. You can apply BEFORE you've found a specific property. Get SDA into your plan first, then search for housing βœ…

2️⃣ Choose the Right OT
Your Occupational Therapist's assessment is the most critical document. Pick an OT with SPECIFIC SDA experience β€” not all OTs know the SDA guidelines and design categories πŸ“‹

3️⃣ Be Specific About Your Needs
"I need accessible housing" WON'T cut it. Detail exactly what features you need and WHY.
Example: "I require ceiling hoists because I cannot transfer independently and my current home has no structural capacity for installation"

4️⃣ Document Why Standard Housing Fails
Show the NDIA that home modifications to a standard property would NOT be a reasonable long-term solution. What have you tried? Why is it insufficient?

5️⃣ Get Support Coordination Help
The SDA application is complex. A knowledgeable support coordinator who understands the SDA pathway can significantly improve your chances 🀝

6️⃣ Know Your Rights
If denied, you can request an internal review by the NDIA. If that fails, escalate to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). Many successful SDA applications required persistence! πŸ’ͺ

7️⃣ Plan SIL Alongside SDA
SDA is the house. SIL is the support. Plan BOTH at the same time β€” think about daily support needs, whether you want to live alone or shared, and what support ratio you'll need

At OneJesus Care, we're a fully registered, 100% non-profit SDA provider with High Physical Need Support certified facilities. We're here to help you navigate the entire process. πŸ’™

Want to access NDIS community participation but not sure where to start? πŸ’™ Here's your step-by-step guide!

1️⃣ Check Your NDIS Plan
Look for Core Supports (Category 4) or Capacity Building (Category 9). Remember β€” Core funding is flexible, so even if community participation isn't listed separately, you may still be able to use it!

2️⃣ Set Clear Goals
Add specific goals like: "I want to join a weekly cooking class to build my independent living skills." Specific goals = better funding outcomes! 🎯

3️⃣ Choose a Provider
Find an NDIS provider that offers community participation in your area. You can use the NDIS Provider Finder, Disability Gateway, or contact a local provider directly.

4️⃣ Match Your Support Worker
The RIGHT worker makes all the difference! Look for someone who shares your interests, has relevant experience, and makes you feel comfortable. 🀝

5️⃣ Plan Your Activities
Work with your provider to choose activities that align with your goals. Consider: 1:1 or group? What days? What interests you most?

6️⃣ Get Started & Track Progress
Start with activities that feel comfortable, then gradually challenge yourself. Track your progress β€” it helps at your next plan review! πŸ“‹

πŸ’‘ Tip: Be specific in your NDIS goals. "I want to do activities" won't get you far. "I want to attend a weekly sports group to improve fitness and make friends" WILL! πŸ’ͺ

At OneJesus Care, we guide you through every step. From understanding your plan to matching you with the perfect support worker β€” we're here for you. 🌟

Want to apply for SDA but not sure where to start? πŸ’™ Here's your step-by-step guide!

⚠️ Important: Start this process at least 6-12 MONTHS before you want to move in. It takes time!

1️⃣ Develop a Life Vision & Housing Goal
Document where you want to live and what life could look like. Make sure your NDIS plan includes a home and living goal. Be specific!
Example: "I want to live in specialist housing that meets my physical support needs"

2️⃣ Complete a Functional Housing Assessment
Engage an Occupational Therapist (OT) experienced in SDA assessments. This report is the CORNERSTONE of your application πŸ“‹

3️⃣ Submit a Home & Living Supports Request
Complete the form on the NDIS website with your OT assessment and evidence. Tell your story β€” what's happened before and how SDA will help. Include: Allied Health reports, support map, carer statements, medical reports

4️⃣ NDIA Review & Decision
The NDIA checks your eligibility and assessed needs. Assessment takes 4-8 weeks (complex cases: 3-6 months). If approved, SDA goes into your plan under Capital Supports!

5️⃣ Find Your SDA Home
Use the NDIS SDA Finder, work with your support coordinator, or contact providers like OneJesus Care directly 🏠

6️⃣ Move In!
The SDA provider assesses suitability, arranges customisations, and coordinates your move-in date

πŸ’‘ Already have an NDIS plan? You can submit a Change of Circumstances β€” no need to start from scratch! πŸ’ͺ

At OneJesus Care, we guide you through every step. SDA High Physical Need certified, LHA Platinum level β€” the highest standards. 🌟

Before you plan your next outing β€” here's what your NDIS community participation funding does NOT cover! ⚠️

Your NDIS pays for the SUPPORT WORKER to help you participate. But under Section 10 of the NDIS Act, it does NOT pay for:

❌ Outside school hours care fees β€” before school, after school, vacation care, school holiday programs
❌ Recreational sports costs β€” membership fees, venue hire, uniforms, footwear
❌ Standard recreational equipment β€” non-adaptive items like toys, balls, racquets
❌ Gym memberships β€” and standard gym equipment
❌ Activity entry fees β€” cinema tickets, pool entry, event tickets
❌ Food and drinks β€” during outings
❌ Course or tuition fees

πŸ’‘ Why? These are considered everyday expenses that ANY person would pay β€” with or without a disability. Your NDIS covers the support to GET you there and help you participate, not the activity cost itself.

βœ… What IS covered:
The support worker's time, travel to activities, and skill-building programs to help you participate more independently.

Understanding this upfront avoids surprises and helps you budget smarter! πŸ’ͺ

At OneJesus Care, we help you plan your activities so you know exactly what's covered and what's not. No surprises β€” just transparent, compassionate support. πŸ’™

Think NDIS community participation is just "day programs"? Think again! 🎨 The range of activities you can do is HUGE!

🏊 Sports & Recreation
Swimming, wheelchair basketball, gym sessions, yoga, walking groups, bowling

🎨 Arts & Creativity
Painting, photography, music lessons, pottery, creative writing, attending concerts

πŸ“š Learning & Life Skills
Cooking classes, digital literacy, public transport training, money management, job readiness

🀝 Social Groups
Social clubs, peer support networks, community gardens, board game nights, cafΓ© catch-ups

🌍 Community Engagement
Volunteering, cultural festivals, library programs, religious gatherings, community meetings

β›Ί Camps & Programs
Day programs, holiday camps, weekend activity groups, overnight camps

The ONLY rule? The activity must connect to a goal in your NDIS plan and be "reasonable and necessary." Beyond that β€” it's YOUR choice! πŸ’ͺ

At OneJesus Care, we design community participation around YOUR interests. Whether it's arts, sports, social outings, or skill-building β€” we'll match you with a support worker who shares your passions. 🌟

Only 6% of NDIS participants qualify for SDA. πŸ’™ Here's how to know if YOU might be eligible!

SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) is for people with the MOST significant housing needs. To qualify, you must meet ALL of these:

βœ… Be an active NDIS participant with a current plan
βœ… Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder
βœ… Have extreme functional impairment OR very high support needs
βœ… Need housing with specialist design features that standard housing CANNOT provide β€” even with modifications
βœ… Have a housing goal in your NDIS plan
βœ… Provide strong clinical evidence (OT assessment is critical!)

πŸ‘€ Who typically qualifies?

πŸ”Ή People with quadriplegia or paraplegia who need ceiling hoists
πŸ”Ή People with acquired brain injuries causing significant impairment
πŸ”Ή People with severe autism or intellectual disability with complex behaviours
πŸ”Ή People with progressive conditions (MS, MND, muscular dystrophy)
πŸ”Ή People with severe sensory impairments combined with other disabilities
πŸ”Ή Younger people in residential aged care who need specialist housing

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Occupational Therapist (OT) assessment is the MOST important part of your application. Choose an OT with specific SDA experience β€” it makes a significant difference! πŸ’ͺ

At OneJesus Care, we help eligible participants find the right SDA housing. As a 100% non-profit, our focus is entirely on YOUR needs. 🌟

Getting NDIS community participation funding is great β€” but are you making the MOST of it? πŸ’ͺ Here are 7 tips to stretch your funding further!

1️⃣ Try Group Activities
Group programs at 1:3 ratio cost ~$27.50/hr vs $67.56/hr for 1:1 β€” that's roughly 60% savings! Plus you meet new people 🀝

2️⃣ Combine Transport & Activities
If you have transport funding, coordinate it with your community activities. One support worker can help with both travel AND participation in a single session

3️⃣ Set SMART Goals
Make goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Example: "Attend a weekly art class for 6 months to develop creative skills and meet new people" 🎯

4️⃣ Track Your Progress
Document how activities help you. This evidence is powerful at your next plan review β€” it can help maintain or INCREASE your funding! πŸ“‹

5️⃣ Choose the Right Support Worker
Pick someone who shares YOUR interests. A worker who loves sport makes a sporting outing more natural and enjoyable

6️⃣ Think Creatively
Community participation isn't just "programs." Volunteering, community gardens, local markets, workshops β€” all count if they connect to your goals! 🌍

7️⃣ Build Toward Independence
Start supported, then gradually do more independently. This progression shows the NDIA you're achieving goals and strengthens your case for ongoing funding πŸ’ͺ

At OneJesus Care, we help you plan smarter β€” because as a 100% non-profit, we want YOUR funding to go as far as possible. πŸ’™
