G A S L I G H T I N G

Hidden manipulation, recognising when others make you the problem!
It starts subtly, a comment here and dismissive reaction there, you bring up something that has hurt you and instead of getting an apology you get a confused look and are told that it didn't happen or that you are over reacting or you are too sensitive or reading into things too much.
At first you might question yourself...over time the doubt grows and before you know it you are questioning your own reality, this is gaslighting!
It is not just someone disagreeing with you or having a different perspective, it is someone actively making you feel that your experiences are not valid, your feelings are an inconvenience or you are the problem for even bringing them up.
Gaslighting is one of the most toxic forms of manipulation as it is designed to make you doubt yourself.
One of the signs of gaslighting is when someone refuses to acknowledge your feelings and instead of listening, they minimise and flip the conversation back on you, they might say you are imaging things or you are just being dramatic or you are remembering it wrong, notice that none of these responses actually address what you are feeling and instead of taking accountability they shift the focus to make you feel wrong.
When you call them out or walk away, suddenly they are the victim and you are the cruel one for not tolerating their behaviour anymore, they will twist the story and attempt to make you look like the problem. It is a complete rewriting of reality.
Why do they do this?
1. To avoid accountability, it is easier to flip the script. They make your reaction the problem instead of their behaviour.
2. To control the narrative, making them the victim, they want to hide the truth about what actually happened.
3. They genuinely believe their own lies and are so disconnected from what actually happens, they do not recognise the harm they cause. They refuse to reflect and self analyse or grow, the prefer to be in a state of perpetual victimhood.
4. To manipulate your emotions, they know how to make you doubt yourself, they will make you feel guilty for standing up for yourself.
5. Because it has always worked before, it is a pattern they have repeated over and over, they know if they look like the victim, they can manipulate you and make you feel guilty, they can walk away without consequence.
How do you recognise if you are being manipulated in these ways?
One sign is if you feel worse after conversations, instead of feeling heard you can feel confused, guilty or that you need to apologise, even though you had a valid concern. You stop trusting your own emotions. You worry that you will be told you are over reacting, you second guess your own experiences.
The most important thing to remember is that your feelings are real, your experiences are real, if something upset you...IT MATTERS.
Someone who genuinely cares about you, will not try to convince you otherwise, they will listen even if they do not agree.
Notice the patterns of doubt and notice when someone rewrites your experience.
Watch for the moment when defending your perspective becomes your full time job. When you find yourself exhausted from constantly having to validate your own experiences, that is not a communication problem it is a manipulation problem.
If this sounds familiar, get educated find out more. Learn how to create distance from the experience in a healthy and informed way.

As you know we have packed up and moved for a while, it has been a journey, great and not so great.

Every journey has fragments of unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

A journey does not always mean travel, it could be a new job, home, relationship, hobby, language, the list is long.

The most important insight I have aligned with is it is ok to make some space to be with the feeling that things are not as you had hoped or expected.

It is ok on any journey to make space for the truth as it is for you in that moment.

Different roles we fill in life carry a list of expectations and those roles can get in the way of how you could be experiencing your journey authentically.

It is truly a challenge to not live through and in those associations but it is an absolute joy if you can, be still, step back, connect truthfully without comment or judgement and be in your experience.

Being truly alive is allowing all experiences. Uncomfortable and unfamiliar at times can be our greatest teacher.
