Understanding Your Astrological Natal Chart – The Big 3
By Jaime Heath
The Magick of Astrology
Astrology is the study of the positions of the stars, planets and other galactic bodies that influence our natural world on Earth. Humans have studied our cosmos for centuries, dating back to ancient Babylon 300BC. It was originally used by ancient colonies to time their harvests and predict weather conditions. In the New Age practice today, we can use astrology to help with self-discovery, to predict future events, and teach us how best to harness our own individual inner magick.
No matter what your connection to Wicca or your level of practice, astrology is a key factor to developing a deeper understanding of yourself & your place in this vast universe. Astrology & Witchcraft are not mutually exclusive. Not all witches use astrology in their craft & not all astrologers identify as witches / Wiccans, or practice any kind of spellcasting magick. Whether you wish to fully embrace the Wheel Of The Year, or simply understand more about the true magick of the changing seasons & the importance of the moon; it is the stars that guide our craft, and by learning the language of the cosmos we can tap into new understandings of our spiritual journeys & boost the power of the planets for our own craft.
~What is your Astrological Natal Chart?~
Your astrological natal chart is a snapshot of where the planets were, at the time you were born into the world. Your Sun sign will help you to understand one part of your personality, however learning to read and understand your whole birth chart will unlock different sides of yourself, past, present & future.
As well as your ‘Big 3’, which we’ll discuss soon, your full astrological natal chart will also show your corresponding zodiac signs for each planet in our solar system; including Pluto, Lilith (your primal feminine power + area of untapped potential), your North Node (representing the overall lessons you were brought into this life to learn), MC (your midheaven or Medium Coeli sign, showcasing your professional success and public image) & the 12 Houses (representing deeper delves into self, values & possessions, communication, family & home, pleasure, health, partnerships, transformation, purpose, social status, friendships, subconscious).
I will publish a follow-up post going further into the 12 Houses & less commonly known signs (Lilith, MC, IC, AC, DC, South Node, etc.) and how to find out what they are.
~How To Get Your Astrological Natal Chart~
Fortunately, it is not difficult to obtain a copy of your full astrological natal chart.
Thanks to modern technology, creating your birth chart is easy using many free online websites. I personally recommend ‘Just Astrology Things’ at the link below!
To generate your chart, you will need:
1. The exact date you were born.
2. The exact time you were born.
3. The general location you were born - i.e Sydney NSW Australia is fine, specific suburb not required.
Even being 30 minutes off could completely change your birth chart, so for accuracy it is important to have all the above. However, do not fear if you cannot get these facts! You can still create a basic birth chart without your time of birth, which will still include your moon sign and all planetary placements.
Another great astrology app I recommend, to discover even more information about your chart including your life path number & magickal correspondences, is Nebula: Horoscope & Astrology. You can use this app for free, although I highly recommend the small subscription fee, as the features it unlocks are very worthwhile. I have no affiliation with this app.

~Understanding Your ‘Big 3’~
Every zodiac sign placement in your natal chart has a specific purpose, however when you are just starting out to understand these, there are three major placements you should focus on first. These are your Sun Sign, Moon Sign, and Ascendant or aka Rising Sign. Your ‘Big 3’ signs have the most influence on your life, your personality, emotions, and social perception.
Your Sun sign represents your core or overall self. This is your main ‘star sign’, calculated by the day you were born and which zodiac sign the sun was moving through on that day, a cycle which changes every 30 days. Your Sun sign is who you are at your core & the type of person you are growing up to be in this lifetime. It shows how you express yourself, sums up your basic personality traits & your life’s purpose.
Your Moon sign represents your emotional self, your feelings & how you process them. This includes your intuition, instincts and where you find comfort & security. The moon moves through a zodiac sign every two and a half days, meaning you can point some blame to Mother Lunar for your ever-changing moods. The moon has such a major role in Wicca that you could say your moon sign is also your inner witch sign. It will teach you how you can best take care of yourself mentally & also where to tap into your psychic gifts & magickal powers.
Your Ascendant (or Rising) sign is your social self. This represents others’ perceptions of you, how you are seen by other people & come across in this world, it’s also what motivates your actions and drive to do whatever it is you do with passion. The Ascendant sign is one of the most important placements in your chart, but also the hardest to calculate. It can only be figured out by knowing your specific time and location of birth, as it is based on the zodiac sign that was ascending the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. This sign will change every couple of hours throughout one day, so may be incorrect if you don’t know your time of birth.
~Zodiac Energies by their Elements – A Quick Summary~
The 12 zodiac signs are split into x4 groups of threes, corresponding to their associated element of nature.
Cancer, Pisces & Scorpio are signs of the Water element. Water signs are known for their deep emotions and powerful intuition. They can be sensitive and sentimental people, causing them to regularly take things to heart. Although they are deep thinkers, they also make extremely loving & loyal partners. The psychic abilities of water signs are said to be the most powerful.
Aries, Leo & Sagittarius are the Fire signs. Known for their boldness, creativity and daring attitudes; fire signs can also have hot tempers. Although, despite their temperamental ways, they are very spontaneous & exciting, passionate & l***y. They carry a high energy of compulsive competitiveness & are very action oriented.
Ta**us, Virgo, Capricorn are our grounded Earth element signs. Highly patient & practical, Earth signs are fiercely loyal but also stubborn and inflexible at times. These signs are stable, pragmatic, reliable and said to persevere. With their unwavering determination, they are the organisers of the zodiac, and their rooted, grounded approach to life encourages those around them to follow suit.
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius are associated with the Air element. They are generally extremely intellectual beings and great communicators. They are adventurous & curious, ever-changing like the wind. They can come off as flighty or flaky to those who don’t understand their elusive nature. The analytical mind of air signs can be quite impressive, they value balance and candor in their lives.
