Mini Painting Showcase: The Classics!

This term, our theme is all about the classics, and today we’re thrilled to spotlight our Mama Owlbear and Baby Owlbear minis!

Every single piece has been painted so uniquely-no two are alike! While most participants mastered the core techniques of base coating, layering, and washing, many went the extra mile and added dry brushing for that extra pop of detail.

And have you checked out those twinkling eyes on some of the Owlbears? They look like they’re ready to leap off the table!

The creativity is incredible: bold color choices, subtle blends, and imaginative finishes that make each miniature a true work of art.

But it’s not just about painting-it’s about connection. Our participants share ideas, encourage one another, and grow socially in a safe, supportive space while leveling up their skills.

Which Owlbear is your favorite?

𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤: 𝐑𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐂𝟏𝟔!

This week we’re celebrating Riley’s incredible growth in our Minecraft social group!

Not long ago, Riley wanted everything spawned in for him-but now he’s asking for help digging up diamonds instead. That might sound small, but it’s a HUGE mindset shift toward understanding that great rewards take effort (even if he’s still getting a little help along the way 😄).

Even more impressive?
Riley has embraced new ways of participating when things don’t go exactly as planned. Instead of giving up, he’s learning to explore alternatives and keep the adventure going! That flexibility has boosted his communication skills and made teamwork even more fun.

Well done, Riley!

Our Minecraft Social Group isn’t just about building-it’s about creating together in a safe, supportive space.

In our social group, participants face challenges like limited resources, unexpected terrain, and ambitious building goals. What makes these moments special is the collective effort-everyone contributes ideas, collaborates, and adapts plans.

This safe environment sparks creativity and helps participants develop real-world skills like teamwork, resilience, and flexible thinking.

Adventuring together means more than slaying dragons-it’s about solving puzzles, sharing ideas, and supporting each other through every twist and turn.

This week, our D&D social groups faced tricky scenarios that required teamwork and creative thinking. Every challenge became an opportunity for social growth, communication, and collaboration. That’s the true magic of roleplay-building confidence and friendships one quest at a time!

When participants learn to collaborate, listen, and share ideas in a safe space, those skills transcend the game and empower them beyond the table. That’s the true magic of roleplay!

Teamwork is more than just working together- it’s about building trust, sharing responsibility, and working toward common goals. At Minds at Play, teamwork is a core part of every session, whether participants are adventuring through fantasy realms, constructing digital worlds, or painting side by side. Our structured play environments are designed to help neurodivergent participants experience collaboration in ways that feel safe, affirming, and enjoyable.

In 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁, teamwork comes to life through cooperative building, resource gathering, and shared problem-solving. Participants often work together to design villages, build protective structures, or explore new biomes. These tasks require communication, coordination, and mutual respect. Our Games Masters support these interactions by encouraging turn-taking, guiding group decisions, and helping participants navigate challenges together- all while celebrating each person’s contributions.

In 𝗗𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗻𝘀 & 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻𝘀, teamwork is essential to every quest. Adventuring parties rely on each other’s strengths to overcome obstacles- a healer might support the team during battle, while a rogue scouts ahead or solves puzzles. Every role matters, and every participant brings something valuable to the table. Our Games Masters help participants share leadership, resolve disagreements with empathy, and celebrate collective wins.

Because Minds at Play creates a welcoming and emotionally safe environment, participants feel comfortable taking social risks, asking for help, and offering support. These experiences help build strong foundations for collaboration that extend far beyond the game.

𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤: 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐞

This week, Charlie showed incredible maturity and self-awareness during a challenging moment in our adventure.

When an in-character disagreement about sharing resources sparked some tension, Charlie initially felt frustrated-but instead of letting those feelings take over, he took a break, calmed down, and returned with a heartfelt apology for his tone.

This was HUGE for Charlie! He’s been working hard on not getting upset out of character about in-character actions-a tough skill for any adventurer. 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐩𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞, 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝:

*Conflicts in roleplay can feel real, but they’re part of the story-not a reflection of friendships.
*Taking a break and coming back with a clear head is a sign of strength, not weakness.
*Apologising when emotions run high shows courage and respect for the group.

Charlie reminded us that adventuring isn’t just about slaying dragons-it’s about building trust, practicing empathy, and growing together.

At Minds at Play, we understand that expressing thoughts, feelings, and ideas can be challenging for many neurodivergent participants. That’s why our groups are designed to gently support and celebrate every step forward.

In 𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗢 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲, communication is woven into gameplay. Participants collaborate on builds, share strategies, and negotiate roles - all in real time. These interactions involve both verbal and non-verbal communication, and our Games Masters are there to guide the process with gentle prompts, encouragement, and positive reinforcement. Whether it’s asking for help, offering feedback, or coordinating a team effort, participants learn to express themselves in ways that feel safe and empowering.

In 𝗗𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗻𝘀 & 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻𝘀, communication takes on a creative and expressive form. Participants describe their characters’ actions, express emotions through roleplay, and engage in dialogue that shapes the story. This builds not only expressive language, but also active listening, turn-taking, and perspective-taking - all essential social skills. Our Games Masters support these moments with care, helping participants feel confident to speak up, ask questions, and contribute meaningfully to the group.

Because Minds at Play creates a welcoming and affirming environment - where every voice is valued and no one is rushed or judged - participants are more willing to take social risks. They learn that their ideas matter, that it’s okay to make mistakes, and that communication can be joyful, creative, and connecting.

When one of our beloved 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 had a birthday, our 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 didn’t just celebrate - they crafted a party from the ground up!

Participants worked together to design and host a surprise Rat Party in-game, complete with themed builds, decorations, and joyful moments. It wasn’t just about fun - it was a beautiful act of appreciation and creativity, showing how much they value the people who guide and support them each week.

At 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗔𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆, we’re constantly inspired by the thoughtfulness of our participants. This Rat Party was more than a birthday bash -it was a reminder of the strong connections and community spirit that grow through play.

𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞

Confidence grows when participants feel safe to be themselves - and Minds at Play is built around that principle. Every session is designed to be inclusive, predictable, and affirming, so participants can take creative risks, express themselves, and grow socially and emotionally.

In 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, confidence is nurtured through artistic expression. Participants choose colours, techniques, and styles that reflect their personalities or character stories. Sharing their finished pieces with the group - whether bold and bright or subtle and detailed - builds pride and self-assurance. Our Games Masters celebrate every creation, reinforcing that there’s no “wrong” way to be creative.

In 𝐃𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐬, stepping into a character’s shoes allows participants to explore new aspects of themselves. Whether they’re playing a brave warrior, a clever rogue, or a gentle healer, they’re encouraged to speak up, make decisions, and take initiative. Because the game is collaborative and imaginative, participants often discover strengths they didn’t know they had - and our Games Masters are there to affirm those moments of growth.

In 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭, confidence builds through exploration and collaboration. Participants design structures, solve challenges, and contribute to shared worlds. Whether they’re leading a build project, helping a teammate, or experimenting with redstone mechanics, they’re given space to try, fail, and try again - all within a supportive group. Our Games Masters guide interactions with care, ensuring that every participant feels heard, respected, and empowered.

Because Minds at Play provides a safe and welcoming space where participants feel secure and accepted, they’re empowered to take creative risks, speak up, and explore new aspects of themselves. This foundation of trust allows confidence to flourish - not just in gameplay, but in everyday life.

𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐭!

Our Term 4 social group is underway, and it’s all about connection through creativity.
Last week, we primed our minis-now the next 8 weeks will be packed with:

✨ Learning new painting techniques
✨ Practicing fine motor skills
✨ Experimenting with bold colour palettes

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭: 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲.

Friendships form, confidence grows, and every session becomes a space for laughter and shared stories.

This term’s theme, “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬” brings iconic creatures like the Eye Tyrant, Owlbear, Cube Slime, Phase Prowler, Griffin, Snail, and Minotaur to life.

Here’s to a term of creativity and connection!

𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤: 𝐙𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐂𝟒𝟔!

Today’s shout-out goes to Zacky, who showed incredible resilience and self-awareness during one of the toughest challenges in Minecraft: a 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐝 followed by an 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞!

Historically, these high-stakes moments have been overwhelming for Zacky because of the “death loop” they can create. But this week, he demonstrated amazing progress:

✅ Recognised when he was feeling distressed
✅ Took breaks instead of pushing through to meltdown
✅ Identified which parts of the activity were frustrating
✅ Asked for help in a way the Games Master could support

This is a huge win-not just in the game, but in real-life skills like 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤.

At 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲, we believe that creating a safe and supportive space is key to helping neurodivergent individuals thrive. When participants feel understood and respected, they can:

- Practice 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
- Build 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤
- Develop 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡

Every victory like Zacky’s reminds us why these spaces matter. It’s not just about defeating dragons-it’s about empowering adventurers to conquer challenges in life.

Well done, Zacky! Keep leveling up your skills both in-game and beyond.

Once I did that, they matched me with a group and a facilitator where I felt I could grow and develop my character the way I had hoped. I now look forward to my weekly sessions!”-Schien B-Participant
